Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint knife of broad Mesolithic to Early Bronze Age date (10000-1500BC). Knives of this type do not have distinctive period characteristics, with long flakes, unretouched cutting edge, and remaining cortex on the opposite edge present on examples from all periods (see Butler 2005). This example is a concavo-convex knife knapped from a secondary flake with cortex remaining on the right edge and previous long flake removals on the dorsal surface. There is a diffuse bulb of percussion and the small striking platform is still present. The left cutting edge in sharp and unretouc…

A complete hollow scraper of Middle Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (3000-1500BC). The implement has been knapped from a tertiary flake with multiple removal scars on the dorsal surface and no remaining cortex. The position of these negative scars provide a convenient place for finger placement to comfortably use the scraper. There is a very large bulb of percussion and clear erailleur scar indicative of the hard hammer technique. At the distal end on the ventral surface there is a small area of short stepped semi-abrupt retouch which shapes the end to a point. On the left edge o…

A complete lithic implement of Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (4000-1500BC). The implement is ovate in both plan and cross-section. It has been knapped from a secondary flake with cortex remaining near the distal end and previous large flake removals on the dorsal surface. The distal end shows heavy stepped abrupt retouch creating a curved edge. There is also short stepped abrupt retouch at the proximal end on the dorsal surface along both edges creating a blunt point. It has been knapped from a secondary flake, with cortex remaining near the point at the distal end. This suggests the original shape of the flake was convenient for a piercer and the knapper used the form to their advantage. There is a very prominent bulb of percussion and a clear erailleur scar indicative of the hard hammer technique. A complete side scraper of Neolithic date (4000-2350BC). The scraper is sub-rectangular in plan and has been knapped from a primary flake with subsequent thin flakes then removed across the dorsal surface removing areas of cortex. The flake is triangular in cross-section, and appears to have been removed from the edge of a relatively flat core. There is a diffuse bulb of percussion indicative of soft hammer percussion which suggests this scraper is more likely of earlier Neolithic date. A possible flint knife, made from a tertiary flake which is roughly D shaped. The flake has been bifacially worked with covering, low angle scaled retouch on both sides. However, there is no abrupt retouch backing which is typical of D shaped knives dating to the Early to Middle Neolithic. Therefore this date of this object is uncertain. The flint is grey with patches of white and black. This object measures. 54.55mm long x 49.43mm wide x 14.52mm thick. It weighs 38.66g.

A round scraper made from a tertiary flake. Round scrapers are ubiquitous throughout prehistory and are therefore very difficult to date to any particular period. Owing to the roundness of this object and the extent of retouch, many of the features which are commonly mentioned when describing a flint are difficult to determine. The presumed ventral face retains a central spine of the original surface. Around the edges of this face a series of sizeable flakes have been removed. Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint flake which is sub circular in plan. This is a primary flake with almost the whole dorsal surface being covered in cortex. In two area this cortex has been removed, possibly through natural damage. There is soil adhering in the resulting crevices. The ventral surface features a prominent bulb of percussion and a bulbal scar (partly obscured by the objects coordinates having been written in marker pen on this surface). The striking platform is present at the distal end and the point of percussion is visible. There are few visible ripple marks on this surface. The flint is…

Record ID: YORYM-DFECC4
Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A tertiary flint flake of unknown date. Roughly triangular in plan it tapers to a sharp point. The proximal end appears to be broken so the bulbal scar and bulb of percussion are not present. There is no evidence for ripples on the surface. The dorsal face shows some damage at the proximal end. It features a central spine running from the mesal part of the face to the distal end. The flint is patinated giving it an opaque white appearance. It measures 28.18mm long x 6.36mm wide x 2.97mm thick. It weighs 0.43g.

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Riding of Yorkshire

A flint flake of unknown date. It is roughly triangular in plan. This is a tertiary flake. The proximal end of the flake appears to have been broken but it is partly obscured by adhering soil. The ventral surface does not show the bulb of percussion or the bulbal scar but ripples resulting from the concoidal fractures are visible. The dorsal surface shows negative scars from flake removal, not all of which have been removed in parallel to this flake. The proximal end of this surface features a rough area that could be described as hackly. One of the mesal edge appears to show three…

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint flake of uncertain date. This is a secondary flake with cortex present along both of the outside edges and a hinge termination. The bulb of percussion and bulbal scar are both visible on the ventral surface. Ripples resulting from the concoidal fractures are visible towards the distal end. The dorsal surface shows some negative scars of flake removal A fragment of flint has been removed from the lower half of this flake giving it the appearance of having a notch and making it roughly L shaped in plan. The inner edge of the notch has a nibbled appearance but does not show an…

Object type: CORE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint core which probably dates from the late Neolithic to the Bronze Age. The core is discoidal with flakes having been removed from multiple faces. It appears that knapping has originally taken place from two locations on opposite side of the core, or possibly opposite sides of the same platform. That or those platforms have then been removed by knapping across the width of the core. This means that none of the original striking platforms are visible. A range of flakes of irregular size and shape, a mixture of narrow and broader flakes, appear to have been removed from the c…

Object type: BARBED AND TANGED ARROWHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An almost complete flint barb and tanged arrowhead dating from the Beaker period or the Early Bronze Age. The arrowhead is roughly triangular in plan with two semi-circular notches cut into the base to separate the barbs from the central tang. The barbs are of uneven length. The shorter of the two is almost indistinct. It terminates in a flat face suggesting it may originally have been longer but has been broken. The arrowhead is made from a secondary flake, there is a very small area of white cortex present at the highest point on one of the faces. The flake has been bifacially …
