A complete knapped lithic implement of Neolithic date, circa 4000 - 2300 BC. The implement is a blade formed from a tertiary flake which is rectangular in plan with a D-shaped section. As its length is more than twice the width and the sides are more or less parallel, it is identifiable as a blade. A bulb of percussion remains along with radiating ripples. Semi-abrupt, short, parallel retouch is present along the left edge. The flint is a mid-grey colour. The implement is 57.8mm long, 25.5mm wide, 8.5mm thick and weighs 12.8g. Broad blades such as this are common in the early Me…

It is sub-rectangular in plan and sub-trapezoid in section. There is short, sub-parallel, abrupt retouch to the right hand side carried out mainly from the ventral face, and similar on the right side of the distal end. The retouch interrupts the patina. It is 37.7mm long x 25.5mm wide x 7.6mm thick and weighs 6.8g.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint triangular arrowhead of Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age date (3300 - 1000 BC). The flint is a light brown/grey coloured, opaque, tertiary flake. It is sub-triangular in plan and sub-trapezoid in section. There is invasive, scaled, low angle retouch to all three sides of the arrowhead but predominantly to the long sides towards the pointed end. The retouch has been carried out from both the dorsal and ventral faces. It is 43.4mm long x 34mm wide x 6.4mm thick and weighs 8g.

Flint thumbnail scraper of probable Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age date (3300 - 1000 BC). The flint is a light brown coloured, opaque, tertiary flake. It is sub-circular in plan and sub-trapezoid in section with short, sub-parallel, abrupt, soft hammer retouch to the curved distal end carried out from the dorsal face. It is 26.8mm long x 25.3mm wide x 7.4mm thick and weighs 5.35g.

Flint knife of probable Neolithic date (4000 - 2200 BC). The flint is a mottled grey coloured, opaque, tertiary flake with a single dorsal ridge. It is sub-rectangular in plan and sub-trapezoid in section. There is short, sub-parallel, low-angle, soft hammer retouch to the extent of the left hand side, carried out from both the dorsal and ventral faces. There is similar retouch to the right hand side which also has two concave notches formed by semi-abrupt retouch from the dorsal face on the distal notch, and from the ventral on the proximal notch. The tool is 46.5mm long x 15.6mm wid…

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint side and end scraper of Bronze Age date (2350-801BC). The implement is sub-oval in plan and is knapped from a secondary flake with previous removal scars on the dorsal surface and remaining cortex near the left medial edge. There is a pronounced bulb of percussion and erailleur scar indicative of the hard hammer technique. Retouch is relatively crude and uneven which identifies this as a later prehistoric tool (see Butler 2005 p. 166). Short, scaled semi-abrupt retouch extends continuously along the left edge and the distal end. The flint is a light grey with lar…

A complete flint scraper of Bronze Age date (2350-801BC). The scraper is cub-circular in plan and D-shaped in cross-section. It is knapped from a primary flake with further flakes then removed from the dorsal surface. The retouch is relatively crude, sporadic and uneven which identifies this as a later prehistoric tool alongside the large amount of remaining cortex on the dorsal surface (see Butler 2005 p.166). Large flakes have also been removed from the ventral surface leaving several removal scars. On both faces edge retouch is invasive but consists of the removal of large flakes r…

A complete flint possible scraper of broad Bronze Age date (2350-801BC). The implement is sub-triangular and has been knapped from primary tabular or sheet flint (Butler 2005, p.15). It has cortex remaining on both surfaces and no striking platform or bulb of percussion. The knapper appears to have utilised the natural form of the sheet flint and crudely retouched around the edges on both faces to create a possible scraping edge. The retouch is extrememly uneven and sporadic, although is more defined and short scaled and semi-abrupt on two opposite edges The flint is an opaque dark…

A complete end and side scraper of Neolithic date (4000-2350BC). This is a D shaped scraper knapped from a secondary flake with previous flake removals on the dorsal surface and remaining cortex along the left lateral edge. The bulb of percussion is very diffuse and there is a distinctive lip on the striking platform, both indicative of the soft hammer percussion technique. This may also tentatively suggest an earlier Neolithic date as soft hammer was used less in the later Neolithic. There is continuous retouch along the left edge, distal end, and halfway up the right edge of the d…
