Record ID: SUSS-A740A9
Object type: POT BOILER
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A collection of eight fire-cracked flint nodules. The flint is unworked and has a cracked and broken surface caused by exposure to intense heat. Fire cracked flints were for a long time attributed to being pot boilers; however, the fact that flint shatters into sharp shards has made this theory more questionable. It is suggested that the flints that have been cracked in this way were used as fire surrounds and have fractured due to repeated heating and cooling in this environment.

Record ID: SUSS-8872F6
Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A large flint flake, probably part of the debitage from a larger flint nodule; of uncertain prehistoric date. The object has a large prepared platform with a significant bulb of percussion and irregular ripples which run the length of the flake. The dorsal face of the flake has a central ridge running from platform to distal end. No signs of contemporary retouch are visible, however it appears that an individual at a more recent date has worked one mesial edge as the inner flint material has become exposed. The flint has an overall yellow-red patina, which is typical to flint arte…

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A possible unfinished roughout of a flint implement of uncertain prehistoric date. The object is sub-triangular in plan with a sub-triangular to sub-oval cross-section, moving from proximal to distal ends. Although it seems that this object was shaped into a triangle and there are some visible remains of knapping to support this, its surface has been rolled and abraded to such a degree that identification is difficult. In addition, the presence of crystalline impurities in the flint material suggests that perhaps this object was initially shaped and then discarded before finishing. Ce…

Record ID: SUSS-DF31F3
Object type: CORE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A possible core trimming of uncertain date, probably between the Mesolithic and early Bronze Age period (c. 8300-1500 BC). The object is pyriform in plan, with a widening sub-triangular cross-section. Light ripples are visible on one face, but the bulb and platform of percussion is missing. No small retouch is visible although there are microlithic removals on what is presumably the semi-circular distal edge. A small strip of cortex remains on the dorsal surface, running from the mesial edge to one of the outer edges, near the distal end. Dispersed fractures on both surfaces revea…

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A large piece of crudely worked flint which has areas of clear removal on one end, perhaps indications of its usage as a core or rough chopping implement. Date uncertain. Many surfaces are obscured with presumably natural breakage. The object measures 87.67 mm long; 56.57 mm wide at core end; 34.84 mm thick at core end; 255 grams.

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint flake of uncertain, Mesolithic-Bronze Age date. The flake is struck from a prepared platform with bulb of percussion and percussion waves on the ventral face and arises showing multiple previous removals from the same platform on the distal face. It is irregular in outline with the right proximal corner missing to a snap and several large indents. It thickens from a flat section at the proximal end to steeply D shaped at the distal end, the end has some smaller parallel removals which may be from a crude atempt to shape it into a tool or from tidying the core during production. …

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two pieces of flint debitage from knapping of uncertain, Mesolithic-Bronze Age date. The first is complete with a bulb of percussion on the ventral face and arises showing multiple previous removals and mis-hits form the same platform. Chips from the edge appear to be due to damage, some possibly recent. It is in dark grey flint and weighs 2.71 grams. The second piece is snapped at both ends and was form a longer piece, flat in section at one end it is triangular at the other suggesting it is debitage rather than a neat plade. It has part of the bulb and percussion waves on the ventra…

Secondary flake struck off a prepared platform with bulb of percussion, percussion waves and multiple arises from previous removals. There is a tiny amount of cortex remaining at the distal end and various baruyral flaws in the flint. There is evidence of starch fracturing and accidental or natural breaks at the proximal end of the left edge of the dorsal face. There is a small area of short semi-abrupt parallel retouch at the proximal end of the right edge on the dorsal face and possible usewear chipping down the rest of this edge. 34.8mm long, 19.3mm wide, 4.8mm thick and 3.27 grams…

A flint waste flake of uncertain (probably Mesolithic to Bronze Age) date. The tertiary flake is sub-lozengiform in plan and dark grey in hue. The bulb-of-percussion survives on the ventral surface, but the striking platform has been removed. Percussion ripples are also evident. Flakes have been removed from the dorsal surface before this flake itself was removed, forming shallow arrises.
