A complete knapped gun-flint with lead casing from a flintlock musket of the Post Medieval period, dating from c. AD 1500 - c. AD 1750. The flint is rectangular in shape and triangular in cross-section. The flint is dark blackish-grey in colour with some lighter inclusions. The flint is enclosed on both upper and lower faces by a sub-rectangular folded lead holder. A complete flint gunflint dating to the post-medieval period. The gunflint is rectangular in plan and trapezoidal in section with broad flakes removed from the dorsal side and with short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect trimming its edges. Flintlock guns were in use in France by c. AD 1600 and it is likely that this example dates from c. AD 1650 - 1850.

An incomplete post-medieval gunflint, made from a dark brown/black tertiary flint flake. The gunflint is broadly wedge-shaped in section and would have been square or rectangular in plan before the post-depositional damage. The gunflake has retouch around all extant edges, the retouch being hard and direct with a scaled appearance. The wedge end of the gunflint is completely retouched, however the dorsal back surface is unworked. Gunflint like these are known from both English and later American Civil War sites and are thought to have been issued during the AD 1650-1660s, possibly alo…

A wedge-shaped gunflint of the 17th century AD. The gunflint is made on a piece of mottled brownish-grey flint, with direct percussion retouching around the dorsal surface end and the two laterals; on the thin end of the wedge the retouch is limited to the ventral side. These wedge-shaped gunflints or gunspalls have been found on colonial sites in America and would have been used with flintlock muskets. Mention of the objects are recorded in returning shipments and post-date c. AD 1650 (Courtney 1998, after Kent 1983).

A flint flake fragment with extensive edge damage. Although this flake looks a bit like the beginnings of a tanged and barbed arrowhead, its condition and construction suggest that it has actually been produced and used as a gun flint, therefore dating to the Post-medieval period.
