Flint axehead. A long narrow edge polished flint axe of lozenge section. The object is entirely covered by low angled scalar retouch on both sides, working which typically detached large flakes and left an irregular aris on either side. The wider end was then polished on both sides, and retains a slightly curved cutting edge of length 44.3mm. The narrower end was also trimmed as several smaller and more delicate flake removal scars appear here, producing an oval terminal of width 25.8mm; viewed in profile, the axehead is stepped, becoming c.8mm thicker 39mm from its narrower end. The …

The piece has a pointed oval cross-section with very narrow flattened side facets and bi-convex upper and lower surfaces. Both faces show a number of very smooth small and large flake scars indicating attempts to polish away imperfections for a better aesthetic appearance and performance of the tool. The straight cutting edge remains straight and sharp with just a few flakes missing, the rounded thin-butted end appears to be the least polishe…

A reworked Neolithic polished stone reworked axehead. It is roughly oval in shape and plano-convex in cross section. Several areas on both faces feature the original polished surface and this is particularly apparent at the butt end of one face. The outer end appears to have broken away, however, and the remaining portion of the axe has been retouched with large, scaled, invasive flakes to allow it to be reused. The stone is light grey in colour, perhaps some kind of flint, with some patination and patches of high gloss in places. The original polished axe would have been of Neolit…

It has rough bifacial removals with the rounded butt of the axe ground smooth and polished on either face. White flint (patinated overall) polished axe fragment. Flint axe comprising a sub-ovoid axe head with one straight side, possibly from an ancient break. The flint bears either large hard hammer flake removal scars or similarly abrupt damage over all other areas except that near the cutting edge, and these confer the appearance of a particularly graceless Mesolithic Seamer-style axe. However, the cutting edge is curved and finely polished on both sides, and this feature commends a Neolithic date. It remains uncertain whether most flaking post-dated the polished finishing of the axe, as…

A polished flint axe dating to the later Neolithic period (circa 2500 BC to 2100 BC). The axe is sub-rectangular in plan and gently tapers to the butt. The sides are flattened. The cutting edge is irregular, and there appears to be a large flake that has been removed from one side, though it is unclear if this is intentional or damage. The axe is a mottled green-grey in colour.
