Object type: FABRICATOR
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Secondary hard hammer struck blade-like flake with a patch of thick cortex extant to the distal end on the dorsal face, of unpatinated slightly mottled grey flint with steep retouch to all edges forming an elongated sub-ovoid plan and a plano-convex section. The distal end is worn and rounded from abrasion. Such tools are referred to as "fabricators" and their function was obscure. It is now known that it is likely that these were used to strike against a split nodule of Marcasite (a type of Iron Pyrite) to produce sparks to light fires. 83 x 29 x 12 mm. This example is likely to be o…

Very large and heavy ground and polished axe of mottled orange and off-white patination with many streaks of iron across both faces. The axe is complete apart from a post-depositional flake removal, some crushing of the cutting edge and a small chip to the butt; this damage reveals whitish grey flint below the patination. Both faces retain some flake scars around the edges, but most have been ground smooth along the median ridge, including a hollow on one face; the undamaged part of the cutting edge is still sharp. Both edges are heavily ground to a rounded profile. Donated to Norwich…

A Neolithic polished flint axehead with retouch and post-depositional damage. The axehead has a pointed oval to almost lozenge shaped cross section. A lot of the polished surface has been removed by retouch and small amounts of damage. The polished surface survives predominantly along the centre of both sides which then extends, flaring into a fan shape, to cover all of the blade end. Retouch is present along both edges of both sides of the axehead and around both sides of the butt end giving the appearance of an axe rough-out with only partial polish. Small irregular shaped areas of …

A struck flint implement, probably a leaf shaped arowhead of Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date. It is struck from a mottled grey/brown flint, is ogival in form with rounded base and snapped at the pointed end. The object is bifacially worked with covering, scaled and low angle retouch. It measures 34.58mm in length, 22.51mm in width, 4.13mm in thickness, and 3.61g in weight. This is a probable snapped leaf arrowhead, most likely of ogival form. It is of Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date, c.4000-1600 BC.

A lightly patinated flake, re-utilised (unpatinated) into leaf shape with fine invasive, but relatively steep, edge retouch on one face, but with similar retouch on the opposite face limited to the butt. The flaking is very similar to that on a plano-convex flint knife of early Bronze Age date but is probably more likely to be a leaf- shaped arrowhead of Neolithic date.
