Tertiary chert waste flake. Mid grey-brown chert with white flecks. Matt patina. A small striking platform can be seen at the proximal end. and there are waves of percussion on the ventral surface. The dorsal surface has three main elongate, longitudinal flaking scars indicating that it is the result of bladelet production. There is some edge damage along both sides where the darker colour of the underlying chert can be seen (this indicates that the damage is more recent). Late Neolithic to early Bronze Age.

Two pieces of chert debitage of probable Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (c. 3000 - 1600 BC). Both the pieces are of chert one which can be identified as Portland chert, the other being a coarser differently sourced chert. The Portland flake is a secondary flake with a thin dark grey cortex. Its chert is an even darker grey with no inclusions and a semi glossy patina. The ventral surface shows further flake removals although it is not possible to determine wether these were intentional or occurred while in the ground. The remaining chert piece is a secondary flake with a whi…

Measurements: 38.9mm length, 21.5mm width, 6.2mm thickness, weight 5.42g.

A flint core and chert scraper found in close proximity dating to the Neolithic to Early Bronze Age period, c. 3000-1800 BC. The core is a dark brownish-black in colour, with large amounts of pitting and speckling across the surface. Long rectilinear removals suggest it may have been used in blade production. It is D-shaped in section and loosely rectangular in shape. The scraper is formed of a mid-orange chert, and is triangular in shape and a trapezoidal in section. There is clear, coarse, semi-abrubt retouch around the outer perimeter of the scraper. Measurements: …

A fragment or roughout of a possible Neolithic knife, dating to c. 3000-1800 BC. The object is formed of a dark grey flint, although this is entirely covered in an exceptionally consistent layer of patinisation. It now appears pale grey and almost white, with patches of iron staining on both the dorsal and ventral faces. It is pointed oval in cross section, and bullet-shaped in plan, rectangular with a pointed proximal end which is nonetheless slightly rounded. It is extremely consistent in its symmetry when viewed in section, and parts of the surface appear to have undergone th…

A flint notched piece with an integral awl of probable Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. The implement has been made on a primary flake and there is a large area of cortex on the dorsal surface. At the proximal end is a small striking platform and below this on the ventral surface is the bulb of percussion and a marked bulbar scar. Ripples radiate down the ventral surface and there are several flaking scars on the dorsal surface. On one lateral edge a notch has been created using semi-abrupt retouch on the ventral surface. There is a further more abruptly retouched notch adjacent to…

Object type: BORER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset

Flint borer, made from a tertiary flake. There is a small amount of plough damage, particularly to the left and proximal edges. The borer has a central arise on the dorsal face, with another to the right. The ventral face is flat, becoming convex towards the bulb of percussion on the proximal end. There is evidence of very fine abrupt retouch along the right end of the dorsal face, and on the left hand side of the ventral face towards the distal end. The distal end forms a point. The tip of this is blunt and rounded due to damage following deposition, suggesting it was originally long…
