Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worked piece of flint probably an end scraper of Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date. The scraper is struck off a tertiary flake and retains no cortex. The scraper is sub-oval in plan albeit with a pointed proximal end and flat distal end. Both Mesal edges and the distal end show occasional abrupt retouch along the majority of their dorsal surface with a more recent chip having removed evidence along the remaining part. One mesal edge has two shallow chips but these look to be post-depositional. The dorsal face also has three earlier flake removals struck in the same direction a…

A thick plano-convex, sub-triangular battered flint nodule, probably used as a hammerstone. The flint is opaque and mottled light to mid-grey and beige with a low-gloss blue-grey patina and heavy areas of reddish brown ferrous staining. There are patchy areas of chalky nodular cortex around the circumference equal to areas of irregular and incoherent flaking and battering consistent with use as a hammerstone. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A large sub-triangular secondary flake of flint. The flint is opaque and mottled light to mid-grey and beige, now with thin low-gloss blue-white patination. Both faces show areas of reddish brown ferrous staining, mainly to ridges. An area of chalky nodular cortex remains on the left margin of the dorsal face. Part of the right margin of the dorsal face shows heavy, stepped edge-fracturing consistent with heavy-duty scraping; and dissimilar to edge damage on the remainder of the flake. Broad flake removal scars are visible across the dorsal face. The ventral face has a low bulb of perc…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A large side scraper tool made on a sub-oval primary flake of flint. The flint is opaque and mottled light to mid-grey and beige with a poorly-developed blue-white mid-gloss patina. The dorsal face is almost entirely covered in thick, chalky nodular cortex except for the wide and curved proximal end, which has been modified with semi invasive, semi-abrupt, sub-parallel retouch to create a steep sided and slightly irregular curvilinear scraping edge. The ventral face has the remains of a broad, low bulb of percussion (mostly removed during manufacture), and an incipient termination in t…

A large elongate sub-triangular secondary flake of flint, narrowed to a point at the proximal end. The flint is opaque and mottled light to mid-grey. Much of the object is now covered in a thin mid-gloss patina, with areas of reddish brown ferrous staining which is especially heavy on flake scar ridges. An area of nodular cortex remains on the distal end of the dorsal face. The dorsal face shows broad flake removal scars on both left and right sides creating a central ridge. Both margins show possible re-working at the proximal end to form a crude point - possibly a heavy-duty awl or p…

Two small areas of nodular cortex remain. Broad flake scars and more linear blade flakes scars are visible around all sides, many showing hinge fractures.
