Object type: LAUREL LEAF
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Small, invasively and bifacially knapped ovate, of unpatinated mottled dark grey flint with thin, grey cortex with slight rusty iron scrapes extant to the dorsal face only, all flake scars appear to be semi-hard hammer struck. The symmetry is good overall, giving a thinner section, and lower angle edges towards the “point”, this would suggest the point is the main cutting edge. Butler, C. (2005) lists similar objects as Laurel Leaves and suggests use as a small bifacial knife, some with pressure flaked finishes to the surfaces, though this is lacking on this example. Early…

Four struck flakes, all hard hammer struck unless stated otherwise. Marked “Strumpshaw” listed as A1, though not marked as such. Tertiary struck flake of unpatinated mottled grey flint, irregular edges, shallow notch to the long (distal) edge, the small flakes are detached from the dorsal face as would be expected in conventional retouch, another slight notch to one side of the platform in the same manner, these may be recent damage rather than intentional. 37.5 x 26 x 8 mm, 7g. Pale grey flint possible debitage. A thin flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and a bulb at the narrow end of its ventral side. A dense creamy patina then developed over struck surfaces, suggesting a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. A further large flake was subsequently detached from the ventral side of the flake using the same striking platform as had figured in the initial working. A serrated appearance along the longest edge of the flake may, however, be misleading as it appears to arise from a series of fortuitously occurring edge-on chips. Suggested…
