Incomplete Neolithic axehead with damaged cutting and butt ends. It measures 94.2x49.4(cutting edge)x28.6mm and weighs 235.87g. The axehead is lentoid in section but the sides are flattened. The cutting edge is quite thick - 5.5mm at breaks - and has very jagged damage. The butt end (38.8mm wide) is more damaged, possibly recently as it shows a black colour beneath the surface. The rest of the axe has an amount of orangey iron staining. The stone is not local, and may possibly be from Cornwall. It consists of large particles and looks a little like granite.

A Neolithic polished flint axehead which has been broken widthways and then reworked. The axe dates from between circa 3500 BC to 2100 BC. The surviving part of the axe is the larger butt end of the tool. The butt end is rounded, with straight sides and the break is also straight - widthways. The break has also formed a hinge fracture. The axehead looks as if it has been extensively polished in its earlier use, but when it broke it looks as if it has been reworked, as it has also been extensively knapped. A small piece of cortex is still visible, possibly suggesting that the polished …

A Neolithic flint axehead. The axe dates from between circa 3500 BC to 2100 BC. The implement has been extensively knapped into a long sub-oval tapering shape. One terminal is slightly pointed, the other is rounded. Some natural cortex is visible on the surface of the flint and some flaws in the make up of the flint are also visible. The rounded butt end of the axe has been finely knapped, to form a sharp and precise cutting edge, which resembles Neolithic scraper technology. The knapping scars have formed high arrises. Running roughly down the centre of each side of the flint ther…

Incomplete polished flint axe of Neolithic date (4500 BC - 2000 BC). The blade is slightly damaged and the butt is incomplete. Length 119mm, width 56mm and 20mm thick. The axe is of a mid-brown/cream mottled flint which has been knapped then most of the surface subsequently polished. There is a series of neat scaling along both long sides of the axe suggesting a middle to later Neolithic date. There is also some polished scaling remaining along the blade edge. At the distal end the dark flint below is visible in the flat bottom, and it can be seen at another point further up in the axe where it has been damaged. A polished flint axehead with narrow butt and squared sides. All-over polish with only a few former flake scars present, mainly on butt butt half of axe. Polish is coarse apart from blade end where it is fine. The surface is a mixture of mid brown and grey, possibly partial peat staining. However, one side of the cutting edge has a series of unstained flakes removed at a later date, showing a mid grey flint. These flakes look like retouch but are possibly plough damage that occurred when the axe was buried at the base of the plough line in a sub-vertical position, relatively recently.…

From the rounded top end the straight sides flare towards the cutting edge, which is also convex. The axehead is of lenticular section, the highest point being a central ridge, from which radiate a series of narrow flake removal scars. One side of the axe retains just under half of its original cortex. The artefact measures 91.7mm long, up to 41.2mm wide and 23.1mm thick. The weight is 103g.

There are also patches of iron staining at the broken butt end. More recent damage at the cutting edge shows a light grey/ buff coloured flint beneath. The cutting edge (56.97x1.09mm) is curved and a little chipped. The sides of the axe have been polished…

An incomplete Neolithic (3500-2100 BC) flint Polished Axehead with convex sides, with damage to the butt end (probably the original end) and one side. It measures 95.46x(max)56.78x(max)28.53mm and weighs 177.74g. The flint is heavily patinated and a greyish-white in colour. On one face, close to the damage, is a patch of cortex that has been polished smooth. Flakes scars close to both edges and on both sides of the cutting edge show variations in the patination, showing damage over a considerable amount of time. Iron staining is also apparent in streaks, particularly on one face. Re…

Polished Axe, dimensions: 169 x 61 x 34mm. Highly ground and polished all over, with only a few faint flake scars visible at the lateral edges and rounded butt: the sides are ground round rather than flat. The curved cutting edge is sharp with only one ancient chip, while a recent small chip reveals pale grey flint. The axe is patinated light brown with some buff areas. Found in the 1960's and subsequently used as a paperweight. Neolithic (4,000 to 2,350BC)
