A light grey flint probable axehead. An elongate, tapering core tool. Made on a nodule fragment of pale grey flint with with blue-white patination, a gloss surface and some iron staining. It has been crudely bifacially flaked from the sides to form an irregular mid-line ridge along both faces and a trapezoidal cross section. The narrower end tapers to a crude point. The opposite end has a crude cutting edge formed by bifacially parallel flaking along the axis of the tool. The margins are irregular and the tool curves along its length, indicating that it is unlikely to be a rough-out f…

A light grey flint pick or axehead rough-out. Made on a naturally thermally fractured nodule fragment of pale great flint with large areas of cortex remaining. The surface has an off-white mid-gloss patina. The elongate shape of the nodule has been exploited, leaving one end completely covered in cortex on the dorsal face whilst the other and and face have been worked. The rest of the dorsal face has been flaked from the edges creating a mid-line ridge, largely retaining the cortex. The ventral face has been extensively flaked, giving the tool a triangular to plano-convex cross sectio…

Flint axehead. A long narrow edge polished flint axe of lozenge section. The object is entirely covered by low angled scalar retouch on both sides, working which typically detached large flakes and left an irregular aris on either side. The wider end was then polished on both sides, and retains a slightly curved cutting edge of length 44.3mm. The narrower end was also trimmed as several smaller and more delicate flake removal scars appear here, producing an oval terminal of width 25.8mm; viewed in profile, the axehead is stepped, becoming c.8mm thicker 39mm from its narrower end. Fragment of a Neolithic polished axe, badly damaged in anquity only part of one face and one side surviving. Flaking around the cutting edge suggest that a crude attempt was made to resharpen the axe after breaking. Pointed oval section with facets down each edge. The implement is now fully recorticated making it difficult to describe the flint although it appears to be of mixed colour. Neolithic date. Length 103mm, Width 51mm, Thickness 30mm, Mass 161.9g

A light grey to beige flint polished axehead. The butt end is missing leaving probably half of the original axe. The cutting edge shows semi-invasive, parallel, semi-abrupt retouch on one face and larger broad flake removal scars can be seen on the other side resulting in an irregular edge. The surface is smooth and finely polished. Lateral facets either side of the axe run parallel to one another showing a faceted cross section. One face shows a long smooth rippled flake removal scar, possibly an attempt to re-use the flint or salvage a damaged axe, or possibly damaged sustained when…

A fragment of a larger flint tool, possibly an axe or adze of Mesolithic to early Bronze Age date. It is formed on a secondary flake - rough pebble cortex still remains on the dorsal face. It is roughly triangular in shape, but was clearly much larger originally as there is an abrupt, rough break at the proximal end. Several large, crude flakes have been removed from the ventral face and there is invasive, sub-parallel retouch covering most of the dorsal face. The left side of the dorsal face is much steeper than the right side. Both faces and the break are heavily patinated. Damage a…
