A fragment from a large polished flint axehead of Neolithic date made from a pale grey-white flint. The fragment comprises the front end and blade edge, which is semi circular, and has broken away from the rest of the axehead across a natural flaw in the stone. The blade has a small chip removal, which may be post depositional and shows little or no other signs of use. The surface bears striations from polishing with an abrasive material, probably coarse sand.

A complete flint Axehead of Early Neolithic date (3500-2500 BC). The lithic is sub-rectangular in plan, long and narrow with a slightly wider blade end. The lithic is bi-convex in section creating an ovate cross. The dorsal surface has covering scaled flaking with the exception of the blade edge which has a narrow edge of polishing following the curve of the blade. The butt end has been blunted. The ventral surface has covering scaled flaking, with the exception of the polished blade edge, and a small portion of polishing in the mesal portion of the object. There is a deep negative sc…

A complete Neolithic flaked and polished flint axe, 96.1mm in length and dating to c.4000-2350 BC. The axehead is made from a light grey to light brown flint and has hard-hammer working across its surfaces. The side profile is lenticular and the axehead flares slightly to a rounded cutting edge. This edge has evidence of polishing. There appears to be damage to one face of the blade, which has lost a large flake with a hinge fracture; this may represent damage from use.

An almost complete knapped, ground and polished flint axehead of late Neolithic date, c. 2700 - 2300 BC. The axehead is formed of an orange/brown flint with larger pale inclusions and small dark inclusions; probably a North Sea type flint. The axehead is sub-ovate in plan; narrower at the butt end with sides which gradually widen to the crescentic cutting edge. The axe has a slight humped profile and a regular oval cross section. An incomplete flint flaked and polished axe of probable late Neolithic date. The axe is an elongated flame-shape, sub-oval in cross-section. It is unusually long and narrow, but not outside the range of know forms. There is invasive, scaled, low angle retouch on both faces with limited polishing visible in places at the wider end. There is a thick orange-stained patina covering most of the surface, but with small amounts of post-deposition damage around the edges where the patina has been removed. Polishing on only parts of the surface can be indicative of a late Neolithic date, …

A flint core tool, probably a flaked axehead fragment. The flint was originally mid-grey flint, now covered in a smooth layer of blue-white re-cortification giving an opaque, matt patina. The axe probably had an oval cross section. A small amount of cortex remains on the centre of one face and many ridges show traces of iron staining. There are multiple flake removal scars on one face and fewer on the other forming the cutting edge. The flakes are invasive and parallel. The object has been broken along the long axis and across the body. Date: Neolithic c.4000 BC to 2350 BC. Dimensio…

A polished late Neolithic axehead, 101.9mm in length, which tapers from a maximum of 47.7mm wide near the blade to a narrow butt. The object is knapped from a mottled sandy brown to dark brown flint. There is some chip damage from tumbling to the blade, butt and edges. A concave area of damage to the edge of the blade has been subject to reworking with adrupt to semi-abrupt retouch. This suggests an attempt to re-sharpen after an ancient break and that the axe was used as a functional object.

A fragment polished flint polished flint axehead of Neolithic date, c.4000-2200BC. Description: The fragment represents a middle section of the axehead. possibly forwards the wider blade end, but it is difficult to be certain. All original sides and faces are heavily polished though a number of original (pre-polishing?) or subsequent reworking flake scars are present along both edges. These flake scars may indicate a period of re-edging or similar reworking and further polishing after its initial production. Longitudinal striations caused by the polishing of the surfaces are visibl…

An incomplete Neolithic flint axehead (4000 BC- 2351 BC). This axehead is slightly 'humped' on one face, flaked overall on both faces and is asymmetrical lenticular in cross-section. The butt is rounded and the lateral sides flare and then taper slightly inwards to a straight cutting edge. One face is light grey and mottled pale orange with small areas of cortex at the butt end and centre. The other face is light buff/orange with iron staining. The cutting edge appears to have been broken and then re-sharpened on the face with the cortex. The removals on this cutting edge are short…

An incomplete unpolished neolithic flaked axehead made from mottled grey flint. The source of the flint is probably the Lincolnshire Wolds. It is pointed oval in cross-section, and slightly convex across its length. One end of the axehead is broken off leaving a smooth end. One face has a crude longitudinal central ridge, with small patches of cortex visible on the ridge. The tip also has a small patch of cortex visible. It is 101mm long, 52mm wide, 25.6mm thick and weighs149.3g.

An incomplete knapped and polished flint axehead dating to the Neolithic period, c. 4000-2500 BC. The butt and midsection are missing in an oblique patinated break, with only the lower body and cutting edge preserved extant. Deep negative flaking on both sides of the axe close to this break suggests this may have resulted from use. Demonstrating a rectangular section and slightly expanding flat sides, the axe has been manufactured on a piece of greyish flint which has now in places patinated to an off-white mottled with blue. Considerable iron staining on both faces marks the location…
