A fragment polished flint polished flint axehead of Neolithic date, c.4000-2200BC. Description: The fragment represents a middle section of the axehead. possibly forwards the wider blade end, but it is difficult to be certain. All original sides and faces are heavily polished though a number of original (pre-polishing?) or subsequent reworking flake scars are present along both edges. These flake scars may indicate a period of re-edging or similar reworking and further polishing after its initial production. Longitudinal striations caused by the polishing of the surfaces are visibl…

An incomplete polished flint polished flint axehead of Neolithic date, c.4000-2200BC. Description: The axehead survives as the butt end and begining of the middle section, likely representing a third of its total length. The butt end is rounded and has an irregular pointed oval cross-section. All sides and faces are polished smooth, though numerous flake scars are only partly polished out. These flake scars may indicate a period of re-edging or similar reworking and further polishing after its inital polishing. The break is angular and likely occured during in antiquity as it is ev…

Incomplete flint axehead of Neolithic date (3500 BC - 2100 BC). One end of the axe representing 50% of the complete axe survives, which seems to be the thicker blade end. The axe blade is oval-ended, with a thick pointed oval-shaped cross-section widening as it nears the blade end. The sides taper slightly inward from the blade to the break which would have led to the butt, now missing. The axe has been polished, although damaged during deposition by a few shallow surface breaks. It measures 93 mm long, 55 mm wide at the blade end tapering to 41 mm at the break end. It's thickness is …

An incomplete large pale grey polished flint axehead. The axehead is almost complete at has an all-over polish with only a few original flake scars visible at the edges. The axehead has broken at the butt end, a common break where the axe was hafted to the handle. The broken area has the same patination as the rest of the object further suggesting the break happened in antiquity. The profile of the axehead narrows towards the distal edge. The butt end does not appear to be narrowed, however the breakage make this difficult to confirm. The plan of the dorsal and vental faces is wider at…

Incomplete Neolithic polished axe. The grinding of the surface of the axe was not sufficient to remove all of the flaking scars. The axe is thin-butted with a squashed oval cross section. In profile, the axe narrows towards the now damaged and broken cutting edge. Broken polished axes were sometimes re-ground or re-flaked, however this did not occur on this axe. The surviving section of axe is 142mm long, 70.48mm wide and 32.42mm thick.
