County: Swindon
Workflow stage: Published
A retouched flint, probably a leaf shaped arrowhead of the early Neolithic dating to the period 4000-3501 BC. The arrowhead is lenticular in shape. The flint is covered with retouching. The arrowhead exhibits sub-parallel, low angle retouch on both faces down with some scaled retouch along both mesal edges. On the ventral surface, the bulb of percussion is still partially present and some concoidal rings are visible.
The flint is a translucent light grey colour with a dark grey inclusions throughout and diagonal white strand inclusion at the distal end. The white inclusion crossing…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Published
A late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age flint end scraper dating to the period c. 2700 - 1601 BC. The Scraper is broadly oval in plan and slightly concave in profile. The piece has been struck off a tertiary flake and shows no cortex, although there are two small patches of re-cortication, one on the ventral surface and one on the dorsal surface, making up c. 5 - 10% of the total surface area. The butt features a triangular striking platform with a lip at the interface between the butt and the bulb below which the ventral surface exhibits a diffuse bulb of percussion with a large bulbar s…

County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Published
A flint early Neolithic leaf-shaped arrowhead dating to the period 4000 - 3501 BC. The arrowhead is type 2B in shape (after Green) and has been invasively retouched by pressure flaking across the entirety of both the dorsal and ventral surfaces. The striking platform is still present, however, the bul of percussion has been removed by retouch. The flint has a mottled milky grey - blue patina. It measures 28.85mm in length, 16.67mm maximum width and 2.02mm minimum width, 3.58mm maximum thickness and weighs 1.71g.

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Published
A fragment of a flint Neolithic polished axe head broken and possibly untilised as a core or a scraper dating to the period c. 4000-2350 BC. The original axe head was a Clough type B lenticular or double-convex polished axe head. The break was then used as a striking platform for the removal of bladelets. Three arrises are visible on the dorsal side of the axe-head. Part of the original cutting edge is still visible along the distal edge, however, the majority of the distal edge has been invasively retouched, removing the cutting edge and squaring the chunk off.

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Swindon
Workflow stage: Published
An Early Neolithic (c. 3500-2500 BC) leaf-shaped flint arrowhead, measuring 42.39x22.51x7.47mm and weighing 5.40g. The tip is possibly damaged.
The arrowhead is leaf-shaped in plan with one pointed end and one rounded end. It has had long flake removals from the dorsal face and edge retouch to both dorsal edges and the upper right ventral edge. It is plano-convex in cross-section.
There are also traces of retouch along the dorsal proximal edge, which would have been hafted into the implement. The flint is a mottled grey in colour with patination spots.

Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete (and most probably a fragment) of Neolithic (3500-2100 BC) flint Polished Axehead with tapering sides, Section faceted. Re-used as a core probably in the Neolithic or Bronze Age period. It measures 71.58x50.95x21.94mm and weighs 87.30g.
The flint is heavily patinated and a greyish-white in colour, with traces of iron staining on both faces. One face retains much of its polishing, while the other has had a large part of its face removed. Both original ends of the axe are missing although both 8-9mm high polished-flat edges are mostly intact.
Some of the flake removal …

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete Neolithic (3500-2100 BC) polished flint adze or axehead, with an asymmetric section, measuring 80.26x51.81x26.40mm and weighing 98.72g. The flint is heavily patinated and an off-white in colour, with a brighter white showing through the flake removal scars.
In shape the axehead has a curved cutting edge (51.81mm wide) and one steeply angled surviving edge (the other is missing), so it looks rather triangular in shape and probably was originally not much long than it is now. In cross-section, the axehead is D-shaped, having a pronounced curve to one face while the other…

Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete Neolithic (3500-2100 BC) flint Polished Axehead with convex sides, with damage to the butt end (probably the original end) and one side. It measures 95.46x(max)56.78x(max)28.53mm and weighs 177.74g.
The flint is heavily patinated and a greyish-white in colour. On one face, close to the damage, is a patch of cortex that has been polished smooth. Flakes scars close to both edges and on both sides of the cutting edge show variations in the patination, showing damage over a considerable amount of time. Iron staining is also apparent in streaks, particularly on one face. Re…

A Neolithic (3500-2100 BC) flint Polished Axehead, roughly triangular in shape, expanding from the butt to the cutting edge. It measures 137.08x(max)56.97x(max)33.31mm and weighs 297.54g.
The flint is very heavily patinated - it is almost entirely grey-white in colour, with a dark grey flint bleeding in at the butt end (which also has a small patch of cortex on one surface). The entire surface is polished with a few (likely ancient) flake removals on each face. Towards the cutting edge the surface is very highly polished and glassy in appearance.
The cutting edge (56.97x1.09mm) is…

Fragment of Neolithic (3500 BC - 2100 BC) flint polished axehead, consisting either of the butt end of a large axehead or the cutting edge of a smaller axehead. It weighs 61.16g and measures 45.82mm in length. It has expanding sides. The complete end (50.17mm wide) is curving with a chunk missing from the edge and one face, with possible retouch. The break at the other end (57.31mm wide, 22.11mm thick) has a hinge fracture within it and may have occurred across a natural fault in the flint. There is natural damage to the side edges. The flint is very heavily patinated - the entire fra…

Neolithic chipped and polished axehead of flint, very heavily patinated. The axehead is pointed oval in section and has a curved cutting edge 57.6mm wide, directly behind which it widens to 60.2mm. One side then tapers to the square butt end, which is 38.4mm wide. The other side bulges slightly just after the half-way point, then tapers to the butt end. The axehead is max.32.4mm thick. One face has a higher degree of polishing than the other, which is more chipped - both the result of the original 'roughing out' and subsequent extensive chipping to both faces. The rather more polished…

Neolithic polished axehead of orange flint. The object weighs 148.45g, is 150mm long, has a cutting edge 42mm wide and has a maximum thickness of 20mm. It is compete but slightly damaged. The cutting edge has one large chip, and a section of the butt is missing. Flakes have been removed along the length of the axe. These are mainly shallow, but towards the middle of the body are deeper. It is unclear whether the larger of these are intentional (for example, to improve the hafting) or post-depositional. Around 5% of the surface is covered in a white patina. The axe is faceted and trape…

Neolithic flint 'chipped' axehead, 159mm x 51mm x 32mm.
The patina is milky-white and c.20% of a grey cortex survives on the surface. Traces of iron staining are also visible.
The axehead is somewhat flatter on one side than the other, rising to a max height of c.13mm from the outside edge, while the other surface rises to 23mm.
A chip at the wider end (the cutting edge) shows a yellowy-brown colour, while a chip on the edge near the opposite end shows a black colour. These both show the transition of the patination, which covers the surface with age. The latter being the colour of fre…
