Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a Neolithic flaked and polished axe. It is sub-triangular in shape and oval in cross-section with an abrupt break across the wider end. Both faces are covered with invasive, scaled retouch and a small amount of polishing is visible on one face between the scars. There are small patches of irregular retouch around the break on both faces, suggesting that the object may have been reworked for reuse following damage. The flint is a reddish-brown colour with little patination.

An incomplete and reworked polished flint axe of Neolithic date. It is rectangular in form, pointed oval in section and struck from a pale, mottled grey to white flint. Areas of polishing remain visible on both faces and along one edge, but the original object has been subject to extensive bifacial retouch and flake removal, particularly at the crescentic cutting edge, resulting in an object that is probably less than half the length of the original axe. It has perhaps been re-used as a relatively crude axe or alternatively reworked as a core. The entire object measures 82.69mm in len…

Blade end of a flint re-worked polished flint axe susquently partially burnt. A large part of the polished blade end of the original axe survives but below this the body has been re-worked with the removal of a number of large flake. Following this the surface, especially on one face, has been affected by discolouristaion and small pocking due to partial burning. Colour is a medium to dark grey/pale/grey. length 70mm, width 53mm, thickness 25mm, weight 75g. The original polished axe is Neolithic in date and the subsquent flaking Neolithic or Bronze Age the date of the burning is unknown.

Flint 'tortoise' core, relatively large and thin. Dark brown/black flint, slightly rolled, with some cortex on one face. A core is a flint from which flakes have been removed.
