Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint waste flake or 'debitage' of uncertain age, likely neolithic. poor qualitiy, opaque, green flint with grey underside, ventral face has a low bulb of percussion suggestive of an early Neolithic date. Keel-shaped section. The dorsal face has a pointed rise at centre and centrally along its length, continuing into a "y-"-shape. Possible retouch along the left side on only one face, but unclear. Length 58.33mm, Width 42.86mm, Thickness 14.68mm, Mass 40.49g.

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Medway
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A large and thick blade worked on a brown flint nodule with large smooth opaque light grey inclusions. The blade has reached the base of the core and so the distal end and most of the right margin carries cortex. The blade has been prepared for removal by striking off a set of converging flakes to leave a very flat and thinned proximal end before removing the blade with a soft hammer. The left margin truncates a large transverse flake scar so the blade came from a 2 platform core with platforms at right angles to each other. The straight left margin from the distal end to the mesal ha…

A broad and thin flake of marbled cream and brown flint, enhanced by blue/cream patination.Apart from the proximal platform the entire edge has been utilised with use gloss well developed on the distal end dorsal surface from use as an end scraper.Shallow invasive flakes have been removed for this purpose. The right margin is straight and finely semi-abruptly retouched as a knife. The left margin has a denticulated edge from notches with gloss from their use on the ventral side. The dorsal surface has many fine feathered flake scars from opposite directions, indicating removal from a 2…

Object type: SIDE SCRAPER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Medway
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A soft hammer struck broad flake of marbled brown and grey flint, worked on its right margin as a side scraper or graver. The dorsal surface carries flake scars including one with a hinged termination and are from the same direction as the main removal. The mesal straight section of semi-abrupt retouch is slightly serrated and is isolated by an abruptly worked notch at each end. Nodular cortex runs around the distal end and half way down the left margin, making a grip for the tool. There is a finger hold added by removing a flake from the striking platform on the proximal end.

A broad, thin soft hammer struck flake of brown and grey marbled nodular flint. The dorsal surface carries parallel flake and blade scars from the same direction as the major flake removal. The left margin is sharp and unmodified but for very slight use chipping or damage. The right margin has had a projection accentuated by a mesal notch worked in fine semi-abrupt retouch. The strong right angle shaped graver produced has had repetitive use with the tip ground and glossy and a streak of use gloss running from it on the ventral side.

A thick triangular section flake of attractive brown marbled pebble flint partially patinated white. It has been hard hammer struck off from a facetted platform after a very similar flake was removed above it to expose the dorsal surface. The sharp edge has been used for cutting and opposite it the nodular cortex makes a comfortable hold. The sharp straight cutting edge has been strengthened by fine slightly denticulated semi-abrupt retouch. On the ventral side there are 2 patches of use gloss running diagonally back from the sharp edge.

A single platform flake and blade core but with truncated parallel scars on part of the platform indicating that this is only the final set of flakes with previous ones removed from a platform at 90 degrees to this one. The exhausted fragment has a sharp projection and this has had a burin removal down the edge of this triangular point. A line of use gloss runs from it from use as a graving tool. The flint is good quality marbled brown in colour.

A core worked to exhaustion and of cuboid form. There are 2 remaining platforms at 90 degrees to each other. One has been worked around 3 sides and the other part way around 2 sides, producing flakes and flake blades. The flint is apparently unflawed but contains a large coarse inclusion which may have discouraged further removals. The flint is grey and beginning to patinate blue/cream.

A flat triangular flake of local dark brown flint (revealed by a recent chip) which is all over cream patinated with some Coombe rock deposit. Both convergent margins are flaked to make a point with small removals at the tip as a borer for boring into strong material ie wood with a bifacially blunted notch on one margin towards the tip as a finger and thumb hold with blunting at the opposite end to be comfortable in the hand.

A core worked on a piece of nodular flint patinated cream and revealing dark brown colour in a recent chip. Flakes have been removed from 2 platforms at 60 degrees to each other with a thin crust of cortex inbetween. Preparation has been slight with a few small flakes removed before the major removals. These have terminated with hinges others feathering out and some truncated by the other flaking face. The core has been well curated and discarded when nothing useful remained.

A core worked nearly all the way around a section of nodule of brown flint. The single platform appears to have been a natural thermal fracture and this was chosen out of the many available surface flints. There has been a little preparation prior to flake removal with abrasion of the platform edge and then a consistent set of thin flakes with feathered terminations struck off with a soft hammer. There is a cortex covered dimple at the base of the core and remaining cortex and a natural thermal facet below it. A truncated flake scar at the base next to the dimple shows that the core h…

This is a scraper worked on a stout flake of marbled brown nodular flint. The ventral surface and platform show 2 complete bulbs of percussion. Rather than poor technique this may be a way of producing large, broad and flat flakes. Multiple bulbs of percussion occur on some other flakes from this deposit. The plan of the tool is broadly triangular with steep flakework on the expanding margins from the butt. The distal end is also steeply flaked and slightly undercut with re-sharpening as the main working edge.

An end scraper formed on a hard hammer struck flake from a prepared nodule of marbled brown flint. The preparation removals at the proximal end have thinned the tool towards the butt. This has been retouched on the left dorsal margin to a blunt and wide notch with another smaller one close to the mesal. Together these make a strong grip to wrap the fingers around and over the ventral surface. The distal end of the tool is thin and of convex plan with semi-invasive bifacial flake scars to give a sharp and strong working edge.

A thick flake of marbled brown flint. The dorsal surface carries boldly struck flake scars over its surface and may have been a waste flake from making a handaxe. The edges have been notched to taper the distal end and right margin to a broad point with finger grips on the sides. The point has been retouched on both sides; likely as an awl. The ventral surface has a large flake removed for a thumb grip. It is locally cream patinated but is contemporary with the rest of the work as the patination does not totally extend to the distal end of the flake scar yet carries over onto an adjac…

A core worked on a nodule of brown river-stained flint. A single platform has been worked around 3 sides producing flake blades, leaving the back as cortex. The platform has a facet and this has enabled a new set of flakes to be removed at a slightly different angle. The flint was good quality; without coarse inclusions or cracks, judging by the set of flake scars, however the final set are short step fractures all around with crushing and abrasion and steps even being driven into the platform. This change and deterioration of technique may be due to passing the core on to an apprenti…
