Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Complete end scraper of conventional form; made from a secondary, hard hammer struck flake of glossy black flint with some inclusions, steeply retouched at the distal end to form the semi-circular scraping edge, small patch of sandy coloured thin cortex extant to one lateral side, showing the outside curve of the flint nodule this was struck from. A very useful tool in the initial preparation of fresh hides for tanning, effective in removing the subcutaneous fat from just below the surface of the skin. Neolithic, 4,000 to 2,350 BC.

A heavy butted Neolithic fully ground and polished flint axe, of white patinated flint with a slightly grey inclusions to one face, all surfaces have both spotty iron stains and streaks from contact with agricultural machinery. The axe has been damaged at some point to the cutting edge, it appears that a large flake has initiated at the cutting edge (presumably in use) and has left a “plunging” flake to one face, the flake has terminated in a large step fracture, this is a common feature to axes that have broken in use, like NMS-7AE7C9, NMS-E21D6A and NMS-4EA515, the last t…

Neolithic part-polished, thin butted axe, of lightly patinated light grey flint with a band of darker flint to the butt, the pale buff coloured parts are the slightly coarser inclusions within the flint, one face is streaked with rusty iron scrapes from agricultural machinery, all flake scars appear to be soft hammer struck and nearly all the flakes terminate without hinges to the dorsal face, the ventral face is slightly coarser and exhibits many fine step/hinge terminations to the flakes, this is not unusual with bifaces. The axe itself is in good condition save for some recent damag…

Complete ground and polished axehead, of patinated mottled flint, now a light brown colour with rusty iron streaks to both faces from contact with agricultural machinery, the few remaining visible flake scars now patinated a slightly darker shade of the same. The cutting edge is only slightly curved and asymmetrical in shape, this is likely to be intentional or the result of regrinding this edge over time, only one recent chip to the otherwise still sharp cutting edge, this is much darker than the original surfaces. The lateral edges are sharply faceted and are almost straight fro…

Complete part-polished axehead, of light and mid-grey flint with the remaining visible flake scars now patinated a sandy orange colour. All flakes are well knapped with only a few light hinge/step terminations as would be expected with an axe, the sub-semicircular cutting edge is entirely polished and without recent damage, still sharp, the high points to the flake scars to the body of the axe are also extensively polished, though not entirely ground smooth, the lateral edges are neatly rounded, not facetted, even the butt has had the edges ground and rounded off. Possible discoidal knife, of off-white patinated flint, made from a “potlid” or natural thermal fracture with thin, weathered sandy coloured cortex to the dorsal face, the ventral face is a typical thermal fracture. Potlid fractures like this with what appears to be retouch to the thin edges are usually dismissed as being not man-made, however in this instance the more curved edge of the two appears to have had a succession of bifacial flakes driven from it, in one spot the flakes pass through a fossil inclusion, in contrast, the straighter of the two ed…

Incomplete tiny leaf-shaped arrowhead, of Green, H. S. (1980) type 4 A, of slightly lighter patinated dark grey flint, the very tip of the base of this point is broken transversely. The dorsal face is very finely and invasively pressure flaked so some of the flake scars overlap at the centre of this face, the ventral face is hardly worked at all, just a few pressure fakes to form the point, this is probably due to the natural curvature of a struck flake; only flakes need to be removed from the curved parts as an arrowhead must be straight in profile to fly in a straight path, the …

Nearly complete, part polished axe, of orange patinated flint, the grey spots to this face are the coarse inclusions within the flint, the other face is a lighter buff colour, probably due to the chalk or other alkali within the deposits it was lain in, the orange is usually due to exposure to iron oxides in glacial sands, this piece must have been deposited on a chalk/sand change in stratification to acquire the differential patination. Approximately half of an adze, the butt end is missing, broken transversely, this break is relatively recent and lacks the patination of the knapped surfaces: - of pale patinated, mottled grey flint with spotty iron stains to both faces. The dorsal face is well knapped to form a pronounced median ridge at the centreline, blending neatly into the angle of the cutting edge, the ventral face is much flatter, this gives the sub-triangular/D section and offset (towards the flatter face) cutting edge that defines an adze over an axe (Field et al. (1984) Type E). The edge itself appears to ha…

Object type: LAUREL LEAF
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk

Laurel leaf, fully bifacially flaked with invasive soft hammer struck flake scars, confidently struck with the terminations overlapping at, and beyond the centre line, effectively thinning the biface, only a few flakes are slightly hinged, the edges may be further refined by pressure flaking/small direct percussion. The flint is of mottled light grey colour, now patinated slightly white with spotty iron stains to both faces from contact with iron agricultural machinery/other ferrous contaminants. The lateral cutting edges are quite symmetrical, tapering neatly towards both ends, …

Object type: LAUREL LEAF
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Small, sub-pointed-oval biface, of mid-grey/brown flint now lightly patinated with a further brown tinge, all flake scars appear to be soft hammer struck and invasive, all surfaces have been modified by flake removals, no trace of the “blank” from which this was made remain, though it is likely it stated off as a large struck flake or a small, flat nodule of flint. The flakes are confidently struck with only the occasional slight hinge terminations to the scars. The shape is intentionally slightly asymmetrical, one side of the base has two slight hollows, perhaps to aid haft…

Object type: AXE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Part-polished axe, of mottled grey and black flint, now patinated mid-brown. The axe is bifacially knapped to form a sub-trapezoidal plan with a rounded butt and a thin, lenticular cross section, a hollow of thin, worn cortex remains to the dorsal face to one side, near to the butt, this is surrounded by black flint. The entire axe is bifacially worked with well struck, confident invasive and overlapping flake scars apart from the cortex, the only unmodified surface extant. The broadest point has been ground and polished to a sharp cutting edge, this is in good condition with only a f…
