Record ID: NMS-7D16F9
Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Complete end scraper of conventional form; made from a secondary, hard hammer struck flake of glossy black flint with some inclusions, steeply retouched at the distal end to form the semi-circular scraping edge, small patch of sandy coloured thin cortex extant to one lateral side, showing the outside curve of the flint nodule this was struck from. A very useful tool in the initial preparation of fresh hides for tanning, effective in removing the subcutaneous fat from just below the surface of the skin. Neolithic, 4,000 to 2,350 BC.

Edges are unmodified. 38 x 22 x 5 mm. - hard hammer struck, secondary, blade-like, of light grey patinated mottled grey flint with some faint tinges of iron staining. Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Near complete Mesolithic to Neolithic adze. Grey mottled flint with thin chocolate brown patination, one patch of light coloured weathered cortex remaining on dorsal face. The object is triangular sectioned and in slightly rolled condition and appears to have been the sea for some time. Although largely undamaged there is part of the cutting edge missing so it is unclear if this is a tranchet axe of the Mesolithic period or an adze of the Neolithic period. The writer favours the latter. Dimnesions 125 x 47 x 25mm

A heavy butted Neolithic fully ground and polished flint axe, of white patinated flint with a slightly grey inclusions to one face, all surfaces have both spotty iron stains and streaks from contact with agricultural machinery. The axe has been damaged at some point to the cutting edge, it appears that a large flake has initiated at the cutting edge (presumably in use) and has left a “plunging” flake to one face, the flake has terminated in a large step fracture, this is a common feature to axes that have broken in use, like NMS-7AE7C9, NMS-E21D6A and NMS-4EA515, the last t…

Potlid fractures like this with what appears to be retouch to the thin edges are usually dismissed as being not man-made, however in this instance the more curved edge of the two appears to have had a succession of bifacial flakes driven from it, in one spot the flakes pass through a fossil inclusion, in contrast, the straighter of the two ed…
