Record ID: NMS-7DDF2B
Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Large tertiary hard hammer struck flake, of sub-square plan and trapezoidal section, only the distal end is extant, the proximal end has broken transversely in antiquity and the break has been further modified by at least two flake scars to the dorsal face using the break as a platform. The mottled grey flint is lightly patinated with iron scrapes to the ventral face, some recent edge damage shows the original colour of the flint to have been a shade darker than the rest of the surface. Neolithic to Bronze Age, 4,000 to 700 BC.

Elongated, lenticular sectioned thin-butted chisel: - of unpatinated mottled pale grey flint with slight rusty iron scrapes (presumably from agricultural machinery) to one face only. All flake scars appear to be hard hammer struck with deep negative bulbs of percussion in places, the thinner end is the butt, slightly irregularly knapped to shape, the other end is better formed with more care taken to the outline, the sides constrict slightly towards the semi-circular cutting edge, this has a small, central chip to one face, it is uncertain if this is from use in antiquity or post-…

Both lateral edges have been abraded to help with hafting, the edges are blunted so as not to dig in to the top and bottom of the wood hafting, this would start a longitudinal split in the handle along the grain if it was used otherwise. Biface rough-out from a small piece of tabular flint, all edges have been semi-invasively hard hammer struck to form an irregular sub-trapezoidal plan, the flakes removed have revealed the central band of coarse inclusions at the centreline that most tabular flint has, it appears the rough-out was abandoned at this point. It may be that a chisel was the intention, but it is difficult to say for certain as it was never finished. This is comarable to Whittaker. The ventral face has a small amount of retouch to one edge, presumably to facilitate the removals (platform preparation) to the dorsal face, there is also a large removal that has been truncated by the break, this may have caused a weak point in the tool leading to its breakage.
