Object type: POLISHED AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Flaked and lightly polished axe. Heavy axe with semicircular cutting edge at the broadest point and a slightly curved butt (58mm wide); in pale grey mottled flint stained brown. Polish is relatively light, affecting only the high points over the main body of the axe and one facet at the cutting edge. The butt and lateral edges are sharp. There is slight damage at the cutting edge exposing the underlying flint, otherwise the edge remains sharp. The brown staining suggests that the axe has been in an iron rich environment, perhaps waterlogged. Dimensions 172x76x40mm.

Blade end of polished flint axe, snapped transversely with a hinged fracture. The cutting edge is sharp with slight recent damage only. The polished and lightly patinated surface extends up the whole of the residual length of 62mm. Edges are rounded but not facetted. These appear to have been attempts to utilise the fragment, part patination, as a core for flake production, at least six small flakes having been struck. The patinated surface has sparse spotty iron staining and some probable scratches from agricultural activity. Flint body is dark grey.

Polished axe, 194 x 68 x 42 mm. In grey brown flint with numerous large greyish white inclusions. Polish extends from the sharp and undamaged, curved cutting edge to the blunt squared off butt, leaving many residual flake scars. Both lateral edges are smoothed by light polishing, but not faceted. Polished flint axe. An unusually thin and narrow example . Flint patinated greyish white with sparse spotty iron staining. The polish is confined to a small area of the curved cutting edge, which has been damaged in antiquity, and to the lateral edges leading up to the pointed butt, which as a result has a chisel edge orthoanol to the plane of the cutting edge. Prior to polishing one of the edges has been prepared by the removal of two long narrow flakes, struck from the butt end. The chisel edge shows slight damadge, probably from use-wear.

Polished axe. Glossy flint with sparse course grained concretions, patinated creamy white with darker grey areas. Highly polished on both faces, especially near the rounded cutting edge which is sharp and shows litle signs of wear. The lateral edges are rounded and converge gently to a broad butt which shows signs of heavy battering and thus has a rather ragged outline. A particularly thick and heavy example with a symmetrical lenticular section.

Polished axe in dark grey mottled glossy flint with negligible patination. Polished extensively on one face from the broad blade up the central area to the square butt and with one lateral edge rounded slightly along its whole length, the other only toward the butt. The opposed face is only polished at the extreme edge of the cutting edge and is otherwise neatly finished by shallow re-touch flaking. The elegant shape suggests that this is a flint copy of an Early Bronze Age flat axe, and the shallow invasive flaking is also typical of this transitional period. Almost certainly Late Ne…

One face has invasive flaking from the two lateral edges and from the putative cutting edge – the fourth side is probably a snapped break.
