Fragment of a Neolithic flaked axehead, of unpatinated mottled grey flint, only the pointed butt remains, the flint has been burnt and is covered with fine, crazed cracks, one face is more affected than the other and has two areas of fire spalling. The transverse break is hackly in texture, the axe was burnt, then broken at a later date. Neolithic, 4,000 to 2,350 BC.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Tertiary, hard hammer struck flake with steep retouch to the distal end and to a lesser degree both lateral edges, the scraping edge is semi-circular shaped in the conventional way. The flint is patinated pale mottled grey with numerous white inclusions. Due to its larger size, this may be of Early Neolithic date, 4,000 to 3,000 BC.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Neolithic to Early Bronze Age flint scraper dating to the period c. 4000 - 2351 BC. Tertiary flake, no cortex remains. The dorsal surface exhibits five sub-parallel flake scars. The ventral surface has a high bulb of percussion with tightly spaced conchoidal ripple marks and a bulbar scar. The distal end an both mesal edge exhibit some evidence of retouch, however, this has been largely removed or obscured by later edge damage.

Object type: CORE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Small core, of unpatinated dark grey flint with thin, worn cortex to the back or unworked portion. Made from a cylindrical projection from a larger nodule, the platform is formed by a hard hammer transverse blow across the projection (or "pap" or knob cf. Skertchley 1879 fig. 2 page 7), thin blade-like flakes are also hard hammer struck from the platform angles that will allow flake removals until a flaw in the flint and the small size of the core limited the striking of more useful flakes. Late Prehistoric, Neolithic or Bronze Age. 4,000 to 700 BC.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Tertiary struck small blade of white patinated flint, bulb of percussion removed, and the dorsal face has, on one side, flake scars removed at 90 degrees to the direction of the blade, this is due to being struck from a multi-platform core, both lateral edges are irregularly damaged. Although it is small, this is not a direct indication of being Mesolithic, also being struck from a multi-platform core could be an indication of a latter date; most likely Neolithic or Bronze Age, 4,000 to 701 BC.

Transversely broken cutting edge of a Neolithic adze. Of plano-convex section and of unpatinated mottled grey flint. The break is just behind the cutting edge and hinges over on the dorsal face and has produced a series of "fluted" flake scars that terminate in step fractures just short of the edge, this type of break is frequently encountered on flint axes as well as adzes and is usually an indication of failure of the flint under stress during usage, otherwise known as a transverse bending fracture.

Large Egyptian Fayum (or Faiyum) hollow-based point found on the old drive of Wolterton Hall, of brown flint with fine darker bands resembling cracks, these where present within the flint at the time of manufacture as the flakes removals are affected by the difference of hardness. Rather thick (7.25 mm) with only a slight hollowing of the base to form the barbs, the thickness would have restricted the depth of the base.
