Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published
Pale grey flint possible leaf-shaped arrowhead fragment. A thin oval flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side by covering angled scalar hard hammer working, followed by short abrupt retouch following the outer edge, and with a flat and rippled ventral surface. The object has probably lost small chips to post-depositional impacts. Suggested date: Early to Mid Neolithic, 4000-2700 BC.

Grey-green to toffee coloured flint; leaf arrowhead fragment. A large thin oval flake with covering angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect, and with invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the ventral aspect on one side. The lower or butt end of the arrowhead is lost to a recent break. The broad blade would maximise blood loss from a quarry, weakening it and enabling dogs and hunters to follow its spoor. Suggested date: Early to Mid Neolithic, 4000-2700 BC.

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published
Grey flint, patinated overall to a pale grey tint, polished axehead fragment. A fragment comprising the polished sides and curved cutting edge of a finely polished flint axehead. The crescentic cutting edge remains sharp, and the aris between its faces continues along one straight side of the axe. The axehead is broken before the start of any narrowing towards the butt. One side remains in its finely finished condition; the other, and the end, are chipped and broken, the latter by a hinged fracture. Most of this damage occurred in antiquity, as an even patina covers both polished and …

The upper and lower sides of the axe are lightly flattened or facetted. Flint axehead. A long narrow edge polished flint axe of lozenge section. The object is entirely covered by low angled scalar retouch on both sides, working which typically detached large flakes and left an irregular aris on either side. The wider end was then polished on both sides, and retains a slightly curved cutting edge of length 44.3mm. The narrower end was also trimmed as several smaller and more delicate flake removal scars appear here, producing an oval terminal of width 25.8mm; viewed in profile, the axehead is stepped, becoming c.8mm thicker 39mm from its narrower end. Blue grey flint with cortex and with varying degrees of misty white patina on its various facets; core. Lump with jaggedly fractured faces produced by multi-directional hard hammer working which, at least on the tidier faces, has removed broad parallel flakes. The varied extent of patina may suggest the re-use of an old core picked up from the land surface, and its exposure to weathering for a shorter period after that re-use. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC.
