A complete knapped flint implement of Neolithic date (c. BC 4000-2300). The implement is a scraper, designed to be held between the thumb and forefinger, formed from a tertiary flake which is D-shaped in plan and plano-convex in section. The ventral surface is smooth with a narrow striking platform and prominent bulb of percussion. The ventral right distal edge displays some evidence of retouch in the form of stepped, short removals. The ventral left proximal edge displays a hinge fracture. The dorsal surface is uneven and appears battered. The left edge contains small, sebi-arupt, sc…

A collection of two flint objects recovered by field walking in the North Yorkshire Moors. The find spot is 750m North of an ancient monument (no. 35455) Lockton High Moor cairn field and regular aggregated field system of suggested Bronze Age date. (2000 to 700 BC) A possible flint leaf arrowhead of Early Neolithic date (4000 - 3300 BC). The flint is a pale grey coloured tertiary flake, predominantly opaque but translucent at the thinner edges. It was possibly Lancolate shaped but there is a horizontal break where a point may have been. It has a round base and has invasive, scale…

A complete knapped lithic implement of Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (4000 - 1600BC). The tool is knapped from a tertiary flake with a prominent waves on the ventral face and a small lip at the proximal end, suggestive of hard hammer percussion. There are further large flake removal scars on the dorsal surface which forms a possible piercing point at the distal end. The left medial edge of the dorsal face forms a curve and has further short stepped semi-abrupt retouch creating a scraping edge. The flint is an opaque dark brown grey, with occasional large white patches. The i…

The dorsal (upper) face has several depressions and nicks which may be due to natural weathering. Some retouch is visible on the outer edge. The ventral (lower) face is rough and uneven with numerous nicks. It is likely that the damage occurred naturally and it may have been a piece of flint knapping waste which was lightly re-touched and used. The implement is made from a pinkish brown coloured flint.

Brownish yellow flint flake. It is a by-product of the shaping of a larger irregular lump of flint, so that regular shaped pieces can be taken off it to work into tools. The piece removed from the parent nodule (or core) is irregular in outline and is termed a flake. There are no indications that it has been subsequently worked or used once removed from its core. A feature of this flake is that on the more irregular face it shows evidence of other flakes having been previously removed from different directions on the core before this piece was detached. This suggests that it was not…

A complete knapped lithic implement of Neolithic date. The implement appears to be the rough out of a leaf shaped arrowhead. The object is tear drop in shape with a pointed oval cross section. Both surfaces have been heavily worked with numerous shallow flakes being removed from both surfaces. The striking platform, bulb of percussion and ripples of percussion have all been removed by later working. The flint is a light whitish-grey colour with some lighter flaws and there are no signs of cortex re-growth. The implement is 39.5mm long, 23.9mm wide, 3.3mm thick and weighs 3.2g.
