Record ID: NMS-ABA0F4
Object type: ADZE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Transversely broken cutting edge of a Neolithic adze. Of plano-convex section and of unpatinated mottled grey flint. The break is just behind the cutting edge and hinges over on the dorsal face and has produced a series of "fluted" flake scars that terminate in step fractures just short of the edge, this type of break is frequently encountered on flint axes as well as adzes and is usually an indication of failure of the flint under stress during usage, otherwise known as a transverse bending fracture.

Neolithic to Early Bronze Age retouched flint flake dating to the period c. 4000 - 701 BC. Soft hammer struck secondary flake. It retains c. 10% cortex at the distal end of the dorsal face. There are three parallel flake removal scars. The proximal end exhibits scaled low-angle retouch on both the dorsal and ventral side. Thsi has removed the bulb of percussion, however, low, widely spaced conchoidal ripple marks remain. The flint is an opaque mottled dark grey colour.

Large Egyptian Fayum (or Faiyum) hollow-based point found on the old drive of Wolterton Hall, of brown flint with fine darker bands resembling cracks, these where present within the flint at the time of manufacture as the flakes removals are affected by the difference of hardness. Rather thick (7.25 mm) with only a slight hollowing of the base to form the barbs, the thickness would have restricted the depth of the base. All surfaces are finely pressure flaked with no remnants of the original flake from which this was likely to have been made from. Almost complete, with only the extrem…

An incomplete knapped flint arrowhead probably dating to the early Neolithic period, c. 4000-3000 BC. This appears to be the base of a leaf-shaped arrowhead, demonstrating a rounded butt and tapering sides that extend to slightly above the midpoint of the original full object, its upper midsection and tip missing in a neat truncation. Knapped from a tertiary flake of fine-grained translucent blackish grey flint, the original flake surfaces on each side have been completely removed by the means of invasive covering retouch (pressure flaking). Preserved in fresh condition it survives to…
