A complete, flint, Neolithic, scraper, 4000BC-2000BC. The object is a tertiary flake with only a small amount of cortex remaining. The ventral surface preserves some of the bulb of percussion though some appears to have been removed during shaping. Th flake is quite thick almost domed and along the distal edge there are several large removals to create a tool surface. Along the bottom edge of the flake where the retouch working edge would be there is a significant amount of crush damage perhaps suggesting that an attempt was being made to renew the tool's cutting edge but this was …

Object type: CORE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint flake core of probable Late Neolithic to Bronze Age date. The core is sub-cuboidal, with several broad, parallel-sided flake removal scars on its main working face. In addition, two flakes have been struck off on another plane. Part of the surface of the core is heavily pitted, which suggests the piece may have been used as a hammer stone. The white surfaces are the result of deposition within alkaline soil. Length: 43.7mm; width: 40.1mm. Weight: 75.48g.

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint scraper of probable Neolithic to Bronze Age date (c. 4000 - 801 BC). The tool, which has been made on a thick secondary blade, is sub-rectangular in plan and of sub-trapezoidal section. The remaining cortex occupies the central portion of the dorsal surface. The mesial edges have abrupt, irregular retouch; the distal end is more carefully worked, with long, sub-parallel and abrupt retouch. The opposing end has been squared off, possibly by grinding or abrupt retouch, and the surface above exhibits long, sub-parallel, low angle retouch, which is interrupted by a fossil inclu…

Record ID: BH-F555EC
Object type: CORE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint blade and flake core, probably dating from the Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age. The piece is irregular, suboval in plan. It is uncertain as to how many platforms there are; however, the majority of blade removals appear to be in the same direction. Some of the flint's original cortex remains; the worked surfaces are white due to contact with alkaline soil conditions. Height: 30.2mm; width: 35.9mm; thickness: 10mm. Weight: 42.24g.

Object type: FABRICATOR
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint fabricator, probably dating from the Early to Middle Neolithic (c. 4000 - c. 3300 BC). The tool has been made from a thick secondary blade and is of elongated-oval form. The pointed-oval section has been achieved by bifacial reworking. This retouch is scaled and low angle to semi-abrupt; it is covering on the ventral surface and invasive on the dorsal, where the portion lacking retouch shows vertical arrises from prior blade removal. Only a small area of cortex remains, located at the distal end of the dorsal surface. Contact with alkaline soil has resulted in a white surfa…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint scraper of possible Neolithic date (c. 4000 - 2351BC). The tool has been made from a long, parallel-sided flake which has been struck at 45 degrees to the platform, part of which survives. The striking point is visible but there is no clear bulb and no ripples. An area on the dorsal surface, adjacent to the platform, displays possible evidence for core preparation. A single arrise extends longitudinally down the centre, creating a triangular profile. Retouch, confined to the rounded distal end, is long, scaled and abrupt to semi-abrupt. Contact with alkaline soil has result…
