Translucent brown flint, possibly collected from the East Coast, knife. Sub-triangular thin flake with a bulb at the narrower end of its ventral surface; broad flakes are removed from the dorsal side by hard hammer strike. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge, removing a powdery-looking patina which is typical of beach-sourced flint, ending on a short positive hinged fracture. The ’butt’ is also battered. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 39.4mm, Width: 31mm, Thickness: 10.3mm, Weight: 9.36gms

Pale buff flint possible knife fragment. Perhaps one half of a thin oval flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a flat or very slightly concave ventral surface. A long narrow flake is struck from along a putative cutting edge. The form might also suggest an over-sized barbed and tanged arrowhead, though the concave ventral surface would probably interfere with flight if it were so deployed. Milky patina suggests the object to have endured exposure to a calcareous environment; the break or breaks [a smaller break appears at the base/butt end] is more recent. Sugge…

A complete flint knife of broad Mesolithic to Early Bronze Age date (10000-1500BC). Knives of this type do not have distinctive period characteristics, with long flakes, unretouched cutting edge, and remaining cortex on the opposite edge present on examples from all periods (see Butler 2005). This example is a concavo-convex knife knapped from a secondary flake with cortex remaining on the right edge and previous long flake removals on the dorsal surface. There is a diffuse bulb of percussion and the small striking platform is still present. The left cutting edge in sharp and unretouc…

A complete knapped lithic implement of Neolithic date (circa 4000-2350BC). The implement is most likely a knife, although could be a small Neolithic hand-axe shaped implement known as an 'Ovate' dating to the Late Neolithic (3000-2350BC). However, the implement is not bifacially worked to the extent expected of an Ovate. The implement appears to have been knapped from a primary flake, from which secondary and tertiary flakes have been removed from the ventral surface. The Dorsal face has been worked to remove cortex on the left medial edge, leaving a substantial amount on the right…
