Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire

A flint flake. This is a tertiary flake, there is no cortex surviving. It is triangular in cross section with the apex of the triangle at the left edge, the right edge is a flat section. It is possible that this object represents a fragment of a larger flake that has broken lengthways. The proximal end is jagged. The ventral face has a small bulb of percussion but otherwise no evidence of striking. This means it was probably struck with a soft hammer and may therefore date to the Early Neolithic (or earlier). The flake has a hinge termination at the distal end. The dorsal face i…

A flint flake. This is a secondary flake with cortex surviving down the right edge of the dorsal surface and on right edge of the proximal end. The proximal end is rough and irregular. The ventral surface has a prominent bulbal scar. An adjoining second scar, almost at right angles to the first, has removed some of the bulb of percussion. Weak ripple marks toward the distal end of the flake suggest this this flint was struck with a soft (bone) hammer. The dorsal surface features negative scars resulting from other flakes having being removed from the same nodule. The proximal end o…

A flint flake. This is a can be classified as a secondary flake as much but not all of the dorsal surface is covered with cortex. From the appearance of the dorsal surface, it seems that a small flake and larger flake that partly overlapped this one have been removed from the original cobble prior to this flake being struck. The proximal end is flat and smooth. The ventral surface features a bulb of percussion and weak ripple marks towards the distal end. This suggests that this flint was struck with a soft (bone) hammer. The flake has a feather termination. The flint appears yello…

A tertiary flint flake. Sub circular in plan with a hinge termination. The ventral surface features a bulb of percussion with a bulbal scar and ripples resulting from the concoidal fracture. The visibility of these features suggests the use of a hard hammer in knapping. Therefore this flake probably dates from the late Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age. The dorsal surface features concoidal ripples running at right angles to the ventral surface. The grid reference has been written in marker pen on this surface. The left edge is thicker and irregular. The flint tapers to a thin sect…
