Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A bifacially flaked flint axe fragment made on a weathered, thin and elongate tabular nodule. Both faces retain areas of worn chalky cortex, but have been modified by broad, shallow irregular flaking to form an irregular lenticular cross section. the piece represents the butt-end of the axe and tapers to a blunt point at the butt-end. One margin has a straight midline edge, the other side is more irregular; both edges have evidence of grinding and polishing, but this is limited in extent and does not extend over either face. The piece may have been broken in use, a bi-faceted cross bo…

Object type: AXEHEAD ROUGHOUT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A bifacially worked flint implement. Probably a flaked axe or axe roughtout. The piece is made on a naturally fractured nodule fragment and apperas to have been broken in manufacture; a single perpendicular cross-body break with marked lip on one side suggests end-shock during knapping. The (presumed) rearward part of the object is absent. Shallow to semi-shallow irregular flaking scars are evident on three facets; the fourth retains original fractured surface, providing an assymetric trapezoidal cross-section. The margins are broadly mid-line, but one is rather irregular, both have b…

Object type: PICK
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable single-ended flint pick. The object is made on a small elongate nodule fragment with thick chalky cortex retained over around 50% of the object. One face has a naturally fractured surface modified by crude flaking. Two steeply flaked facets use this as a platform to create ( where worked) a sub-triangular cross-section tapering abruptly to a point. There is evidence for deliberate battering to blunt the margins of the tool. The cortical butt has a singe post-depositional flake scar revealing mid-grey flint, mottled elsewhere. Original worked areas have a thin matt to semi-g

Object type: CORE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A bifacially worked fractured flint nodule fragment, probably a re-utilized core. The object is elongate but irregularly shaped and has a thick plano-convex cross section, made thinner at one end by a short, deep flake removal with pronounced bulb and hinge scars. Flaking on the convex surface is shallow and irregular, and there is a small patch of abraded chalky cortex near the thicker end. The opposed face retains a small area of naturally fractured surface but has been extensively modified with broad, flattish flaking, some with incipient and terminal hinges. There are two steep fl…

Object type: CHISEL
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An elongate, narrow, sub-oval, bifacially worked flint chisel made on a thick flake or naturally fractured nodule fragment. One face has steep flaking around the entire margin and a central axial zone of chalky cortex remains. The other face has covering, scaled, low angle retouch with an irregular flake pattern, one end is steeply flaked from both sides, producing a sub lozengiform cross-section; the other end is flatter, creating a near plano convex cross section. The 'plano convex' end is blunt; the other end is wedge shaped, formed by an oblique (not tranchet) flake. The tool is c…

Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flake 1: A small sub-oval tertiary flake of Portland chert classed as debitage, produced during the process of lithic reduction. The chert is opaque and lightly mottled mid to dark grey in colour with a low-gloss patina. The dorsal face shows two flake removal scars. The ventral face shows a low bulb of percussion indicating probable use of a soft hammer. Dimensions: 26.4mm x 22mm x 6.2mm. Weight: 2.2g. Date: Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age - 3300 to 1600 BC Flake 2 : A small sub-oval tertiary flake of Portland chert classed as debitage, produced during the process of l…
