Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A thumbnail flint end scraper or piercer of Mesolithic to Neolithic date (10,000 BC - 2400 BC). It is formed on a secondary flake of dark brown flint with a small section of cortex on the distal face. The proximal end is a straight edge with evidence retouch and damage. There is some retouch on the right edge, while the left edge has been left with a concave section where it has likely broken during manufacture.
Measurements: The flint is 30.4mm long, 22.5mm wide and 4.96mm thick and weighs 3.48g.

A rounded flint scraper, of probable late Neolithic to early Bronze Age date (c. 3300 BC - 1600 BC).
It is sub-circular and plano-convex in profile. The bulb of percussion is visible on the ventral face at the proximal end of the scraper. There is a bulbal scar approximately 9.89mm long present on the right hand side of the dorsal face. The scraper has been carefully retouched by the removal of numerous small, steep pressure flakes at the distal edge of the dorsal face.

A large flint end-scraper dating from the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age. The scraper is U-shaped in plan, S-shaped in profile and plano-convex in cross-section; it is 76 mm in length, 52 mm in width, 18 mm thick and 73.25 g in weight. Made on a secondary flake of local beach grey-brown flint, mottled with small light grey inclusions, with two small patches of creamy-grey cortex remaining at the distal end. On the dorsal face are two large scars, from the removal of earlier flakes, which end abruptly 20 mm from the distal end where the angle of the surface of the original core cur…

Three semi-circular scrapers dating from the later Neolithic period or Early Bronze Age. All are sub-oval in plan and plano-convex in profile with diameters varying between 26 mm and 22 mm, and thickness between 6.5 mm and 8 mm; their individual weights are 6.3 g, 6 g and 4 g. The flint is a mottled grey-brown colour derived from local beach pebbles: one is a primary flake, with one face almost completely covered by cortex, one is a secondary flake with a very small patch pf cortex remaining at the distal end and the third is a tertiary flake with no cortex remaining. A chert semi-circular scraper, sub-oval in plan and plano-convex in section and in profile. Made on a primary flake of greensand chert, derived from a Devon beach pebble, with a thick layer of coarse cortex remaining on most of the dorsal face. No striking platform was formed prior to the striking of the original pebble directly on its corticated surface. A very small bulb of percussion is visible at the proximal end of the otherwise flat ventral face. The distal end of the dorsal face has been retouched by the removal of a series of around 10 very steep pressure flakes, exposing the …

Made on a secondary flake with a small area of cortex remaining at the centre of the dorsal face. The striking platform is visible at the proximal end and a pronounced bulb of percussion on the ventral face. The dorsal face bears the scars of removal of four earlier, longitudinal flakes; the ventral surface is slightly concave. A flint scraper, sub-oval in plan, semi-circular in profile and in section. Made on a primary flake removed from a beach pebble with cortex remaining on more than half the surface of the dorsal face. The very crude scraper edge was produced by the rapid removal of around 8 or 9 lateral flakes from the curved distal edge of the original flake. The resulting tool has an irregular edge with a large point at one point which may have also served as an awl or piercer. The original pebble was struck using a different stone without previously preparing a striking platform. The point of percus…

Made on a secondary flake with small patches of cortex remaining close to the proximal end. The striking platform is slightly to the left of the proximal end of the dorsal side. The scars of several shallow flakes are visible on the dorsal side, evidently to ensure that the resulting flake was fairly thin. A scraper worked on the distal end of a large, broad and thin flake of fine dark brown flint. It appears to have been from an imported source of Devon nodular flint. The straight lateral edges of the tool are unworked and sharp but the distal end is semi-invasively worked to a convex plan and finished in fine abrupt retouch with a fine grind all around to strengthen the working edge leaving a continuous line of 0.5mm long removals.(illustrated)

A round scraper with undercut sides; the retouch flake scars often terminating hinged or stepped. The cortex has been mostly removed from the dorsal surface to leave a small patch of lightly rolled pebble cortex. The flint was quite coarse and almost unworkable at the centre of the pebble as it is a large coarse opaque inclusion. The knapper has overcome this problem by heat treating the flint (Google : Heat treatment of flint in Cornwall) and it has turned a deep red colour with a glossy and smooth finish. This technique was employed on a minority of flint tools at Clodgy Moor wher…

A pyramidal flake removed from a multi-platform core or from thinning a biface. It contains a coarser inclusion in the flint. The colour is opaque cream and this may be patination or the original colour but there is a suspicious pinkish hue and some dark red 'splotches'. Furthermore where the edge of the tool has been slightly abraded, the small flake scar has a distinctive lustrous smooth surface. This with the lack of spalling or crazing of the structure suggests deliberate, slow and controlled heat treatment of the flint. There are dozens of examples of this in the Clodgy Moor area.…
