Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete polished flint axehead dating to the Neolithic period, c. 4000 BC to 2351 BC. Only the cutting edge of the axehead survives and is D-shaped in plan and ovate in section. The cutting edge is noticably sharp. The axehead is made of a light and dark brown mottled flint, and there is a hinge fracture to the front of the axehead. There is also a separate flake taken off the reverse side of the axehead, it is inclear if this is a use break or deliberate break. The polished surface has been visibly worn by natural causes likely during later movement of …

County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Small and neatly made complete handaxe in fairly fresh condition: - of Wymer, J. J. (1999) type E/J, of very glossy orange/brown patinated mottled flint, likely to have been of grey flint initially. The dorsal face has a stack of four hinged termination flakes, failed and repeated attempts to thin the apex in the middle of this face, with a further attempt at the bottom left (if viewed with the point uppermost) has also hinged. The ventral face is centripetally flaked to shape but has left the remnants of a large hard hammer struck bulb of percussion at the butt where the flakes didn&r…

Object type: HANDAXE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Small, incomplete handaxe of Wymer, J. J. (1999) type E/?J, of light grey/brown misty patination over a dark chocolate brown colour, the point has been broken recently at an angle revealing that the flint was originally dark brown, some of the high points to the flake scars are iron stained from contact with agricultural machinery. All surfaces have been modified by flaking so no original surfaces of the “blank” nodule or thermal fracture this handaxe was made from remain. Lower Palaeolithic, 600,000 to 250,000 BC.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Possible small handaxe of Wymer, J. J.(1999) type E, of black flint now patinated dark brown with slight misty light grey colour to small parts of the hard hammer struck flake scars, the majority of the piece is a thin, flat, unmodified nodule with sandy and dark brown cortex (butt type a), only the minimum amount of semi-invasive flakes have been taken to create one cutting edge and a sharpened point by a tranchet flake removal on one face (point type vi), this minimum amount of working and one cutting edge is quite usual with type E handaxes. If intended as a handaxe rather than a Ne…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A piece of debitage of possible Neolithic date c. 4000-2400BC. The flake is worked from a secondary flake of dark brown grey slightly translucent flint that has a semi glossy patina. The flake is sub-triangular in plan and in section. it has at least four prior removal scars on its dorsal face all parallel and vertical possibly indicating blade production. On the ventral face the striking platform survives as does a shallow sized bulb of percussion including eraillure scar from which sparse but clear conchoidal ripples emanate. The flake is 44.9mm long, 18.2mm wide, 6.7mm th…

A complete thumbnail scraper dating to the Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age. The scraper is struck off a secondary flake made of light speckeled grey flint with lighter grey pathces and a semi glossy patina. The cortex fragment remainig is a creamy white colour. The scraper is pentagonal in plan and trapezoidal in cross section with the left and right edges angling outwards from the short proximal edge to the wider distal edge which is convex. This distal edge has short parallel, semi abrupt retouch on its dorsal face. The dorsal face also demonstrates at least two earlier fla…

Object type: CHISEL
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Small flint chisel, of light grey patinated flint, it appears to have been reshaped from a slightly larger completely ground and polished example, a very smooth remnant of the original surface remains to each face, though the rest of the surfaces are knapped to the smaller size, the lateral edges have been reground and the high points of the later flake scars are also smoothed off to some degree. One end is semi-pointed, the other is slightly squared off in plan and may represent the main cutting edge, though this chisel could well have been reversible. A much larger exa…

Object type: ADZE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Adze, of pale buff and misty light grey patinated flint, all flakes appear to be semi-hard hammer struck, the butt is flat: the only remnant of the nodule this was knapped from, it retains a much lighter, almost white patination. The cutting edge has been reshaped crudely by removing invasive flakes from dorsal face only from the cutting edge, the result is uneven. This may have been an attempt to make a shorter adze a damaged example, or a failed attempt to resharpen a blunt edge, it is clear that this piece was abandoned at this point. As the cutting edge has been modified, it is dif…

A complete knapped lithic implement of probable Neolithic date, circa 4000 - 2300 BC. The formed from a secondary flake which is ovate in plan and D-shaped in section. The ventral surface is irregular displaying multiple varying directional removals. The dorsal surface retains cortext over approximately 80% of the upper surface. Short, stepped, semi-abrupt retouch is present along the curved edge and into each side. The flint is a dark grey colour. The implement is 60.4mm long, 36.3mm wide, 11.1mm thick and weighs 35.2g. Record ID: WMID-F38848
Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint thumbnail scraper dating from the late neolithic period to the early bronze age. The shape is largely circular in plan and in section protrudes to a point on the dorsal face. The body of the scraper is largely a light grey colour, with a gradation to dark grey to the left of the ventral face (and right of the dorsal), distal end up. Very little cortex remains and is mostly found on the mesal. The dorsal face shoes long, scaled, semi-abrupt retouching. The ventral side features long ripple marks across its length which emanate from the bulb of percussion.

Thin, ovoid scraper made from a large primary flake, all flake scars appear to be soft hammer struck to the dorsal face only, the flakes have not been able to remove the thin, weathered cortex, though a very acute angle has been achieved along the longer side, one end is steeper and more of a conventional scraper form, the opposing end and the “back” are of rougher knapping and finishing, this may suggest that this scraper was hafted, though this is not conclusive. Brown patination, single recent chip to the side of the ventral face reveals the flint was originally mottled …

Object type: AXE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Thick, triangular sectioned blade, soft hammer struck from broken axe; one side of the blade is fully polished and was originally part of the outer surface of the axe, given the curvature of the polished face of this flake it appears it was taken from the curve towards the cutting edge, near to one side of the axe, using the transverse break in the axehead as a platform. Broken axeheads do get used as a core occasionally as they would produce flakes with a polished dorsal surface if they could not be reshaped in to a smaller axe, such as this example: SWYOR-CDDF43. Neolithic, 4,000 to …

Secondary hard hammer struck thick flake of sub-triangular cross section, the distal end has been neatly retouched to both faces to form a piercer or borer, the retouch continues towards the proximal end in two steps to one lateral edge, on the other edge the retouch is confined to the lower half of the flake. Patinated a thin brown colour, the recent chips to some of the edges show the original colour of the flint to have been swirls of greys. The dorsal ridge is slightly battered apparently in antiquity, none of the other edges have this wear, it appears the ridge itself was used in …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Semi-hard hammer struck, tertiary blade, of sub-trapezoidal cross section. Mid grey flint now patinated a misty white/light grey; recent damage to some parts of the thin edges shows the original colour of the flint to have been darker than the patination. Platform has been abraded or trimmed to the dorsal edge before this blade was struck from the core, the bulb of percussion shows a bulbar scar indicating the hammer used was soft enough to drive long flakes, yet hard enough to produce the bulbar scar. The distal end is finely retouched to the dorsal face to form a straight transverse …
