County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete flint tranchet axehead of probable Early Mesolithic date (10000 BC-7000 BC). The pick is sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross-section. It has probably been made from an elongated flint pebble. There is buff cortex on one side and part of the dorsal face. The ventral face has been knapped overall. Some of the retouch on the cutting edge has a darker patina and may indicate that the edge has been re-sharpened. The arrises are not very sharp. This implement, similar to many others found in the Isle of Wight, is probably a local product as flint is readily ava…

An incomplete flint axe, probably a 'tranchet' type dating to the late Mesolithic or early Neolithic. The axe is slender in plan, tapering to a narrow rounded butt. In cross-section the axe is pointed oval. Both sides are worked, and there appears to be an area of polish - presumably through wear - at the butt-end. The flint is mottled brown in colour and patinated all over.

Mesolithic trachet axehead made from a flint nodule, original cortex present on one end, the other surfaces are covered by light recortication, covering an opaque, grey, flint. The general section is D shaped with slightly convex underside. The implement is curved along its length and the flaking is coarse, the exception being the area around the transverse cutting edge where some long parallel flakes have been removed. The cutting edge was formed by the removal of single flakes on both faces; the eponymous 'tranchet' flakes. A Mesolithic date seems likely. Length 194mm, Width 51mm, T…

Mesolithic tranchet axe made from a flint nodule, cortex present on one end and on a small area of the side, the other surfaces are covered by light recortication, over an opaque, grey, flint. The general section is lozenge shaped, the flaking is coarse, bifacial flaking. The cutting edge appears damaged but was formed by the removal of single flakes on both faces; the eponymous 'tranchet' flakes. This object resembles a small handaxe and it might be interpreted as a Late Neolithic 'ovate'. However, there are indications that the object represents the truncated remains of a Mesolithic tranchet axehead. Its section, with the broad edge being sharpened and the pointed end blunt, is the reverse of what would be expected on a Late Neolithic ovate. It is not recorticated and the worn state of its surface suggests that it pre-dates the late Neolithic. The flint is opaque and mixed buff and light brown. Sharpening was not carried out by means of the removal of tranchet flake but by re…

Flint adze fragment, probabley from a Mesolithic tranchet type. The implement has a trapezoid/ keeled section with one flat face from which the other two faces were worked by the removal of large flakes. The flat face is curved (slightly concave) along its length. Sharpening was achieved by the removal of large flakes from the cutting edge which has suffered some damage, probably as a result of use. Partical recortication on a light grey, opaque flint. Small patch of cortex on flat face. Length 113mm, Width 43mm, Thickness 31mm, Mass 163.6g

A flint tranchet adze of probable Early Mesolithic date, c 9000-8000 BC . The implement is parallel-sided along most of its length, slightly tapering at the top. The adze is of irregular oval cross section. On either side of the axe the flake removal scars angle downwards from the broad, roughly defined central ridge. The removal of the transverse sharpening flake has created a steep, wedge-like blade. The surface of the flint is mottled, light grey to creamy-white in colour.
