Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Pale grey flint possible leaf-shaped arrowhead fragment. A thin oval flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side by covering angled scalar hard hammer working, followed by short abrupt retouch following the outer edge, and with a flat and rippled ventral surface. The object has probably lost small chips to post-depositional impacts. Suggested date: Early to Mid Neolithic, 4000-2700 BC. Length: 22.5mm, Width: 17.5mm, Thickness: 3.6mm, Weight: 1.54gms.

Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Grey-green to toffee coloured flint; leaf arrowhead fragment. A large thin oval flake with covering angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect, and with invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the ventral aspect on one side. The lower or butt end of the arrowhead is lost to a recent break. The broad blade would maximise blood loss from a quarry, weakening it and enabling dogs and hunters to follow its spoor. Suggested date: Early to Mid Neolithic, 4000-2700 BC. Length: 28.4mm, Width: 24.4mm, Thickness: 4.1mm, Weight: 3.22gms.

Object type: FABRICATOR
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Dark grey flint fabricator. A narrow leaf-shaped lentoid section flake bearing covering angled retouch overall. The finder kindly suggests an early Neolithic date; this artefact class is known from Mesolithic and later contexts up to the Early Bronze Age. The dating offered here takes account of both the finder's advice and the prominence of earlier flint reported from the vicinity. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 44.7mm, Width: 15mm, Thickness: 5.2mm, Weight: 3.06gms

Brown flint with cortex spot possible fabricator. A long thick flake with two broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a slightly convex ventral surface, overall of lentoid or lightly biconvex section. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows part of one long edge; the other bears adventitious impact damage. The ventral surface appears worn. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Length: 87.2mm, Width: 26.4mm, Thickness: 11.5mm, Weight: 36.33gms

Grey flint fabricator fragment. A thick rod with rounded end, of a massy lentoid section, formed by overall/covering angled scalar retouch; the size of flakes detached must argue hard hammer working. The object was possibly lightly trimmed at its butt end, perhaps after breakage. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Length: 59.4mm, Width: 30.2mm, Thickness: 16.9mm, Weight: 34.86gms

Object type: POLISHED AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Grey flint, patinated overall to a pale grey tint, polished axehead fragment. A fragment comprising the polished sides and curved cutting edge of a finely polished flint axehead. The crescentic cutting edge remains sharp, and the aris between its faces continues along one straight side of the axe. The axehead is broken before the start of any narrowing towards the butt. One side remains in its finely finished condition; the other, and the end, are chipped and broken, the latter by a hinged fracture. Most of this damage occurred in antiquity, as an even patina covers both polished and …

County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Pale grey local flint of indifferent quality, as kindly identified by the finder; polished axe. A large oval section polished axehead with a curved cutting edge mostly lost to ancient [patinated, in two large flakes] and later impact damage, and tapering to a narrower butt which is similarly damaged, though with some indications of light battering in antiquity. The upper and lower sides of the axe are lightly flattened or facetted. The finder notes that brown lines scratched on the surface represent the action of the ploughshare which has upended and damaged the object in the course o…

Pale buff grey flint debitage. Bladelet with long parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a slightly concave ventral surface. Dense misty patina over all struck surfaces is disrupted by very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect following one long edge. This appears to have been carried out after patination and is later in date. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 24.9mm, Width: 9mm, Thickness: 4.5mm, Weight: 0.89gms

Flint with cortex core. Flint pebble with broad flakes removed from two sides by unidirectional working from a flat platform. The object is heavily crazed, indicating it has been intensely heated. This would probably be in a hearthside situation, as the stone is explosively unsuitable for use as a pot boiler. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Flint axehead. A long narrow edge polished flint axe of lozenge section. The object is entirely covered by low angled scalar retouch on both sides, working which typically detached large flakes and left an irregular aris on either side. The wider end was then polished on both sides, and retains a slightly curved cutting edge of length 44.3mm. The narrower end was also trimmed as several smaller and more delicate flake removal scars appear here, producing an oval terminal of width 25.8mm; viewed in profile, the axehead is stepped, becoming c.8mm thicker 39mm from its narrower end. Grey-buff flint probable microlith. Triangular point with long parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and a very slightly concave ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect follows one long edge, forming a microlith of Group A. The lack of patina may suggest the object was incorporated into a sealed context shortly after its deposition. This object is of an earlier object type than almost all the large quantities of flint reported from the vicinity. Suggested date: Early Mesolithic, 10,000-7000 BC. Pale grey buff flint point. An elongated oval point with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and a flat ventral surface. Invasive angled retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows all around the edge of a sub-rhomboid flake, which now has two indented areas along one of its long sides. Short angled retouch executed from the ventral aspect follows the longer and more continuous curving edge and extends to the points at either end of the object. Lithic implement made from dark grey flint of good quality. Flake with parallel flakes struck from its dorsal surface and a bulb on the ventral. Very short abrupt retoucyh executed from the ventral aspect follows part of one slightly concave edge. Object type: CORE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Blue grey flint with cortex and with varying degrees of misty white patina on its various facets; core. Lump with jaggedly fractured faces produced by multi-directional hard hammer working which, at least on the tidier faces, has removed broad parallel flakes. The varied extent of patina may suggest the re-use of an old core picked up from the land surface, and its exposure to weathering for a shorter period after that re-use. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Height: 31.5mm, Width: 33.8mm, Thickness: 28.6mm, Weight: 33.33gms.

Pale rose grey flint with cortex spot and misty patches of patina, a lithic implement or possible microlith. Thin elongated flake with long thin parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a low bulb on the ventral. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect may follow one long edge: it is more easily felt than observed, and does not appear pronounced enough to define this tool as a serrated implement. Grey and white banded flint plano-convex knife. Long narrow flake with a single long flake removed from its dorsal side and a bulb at one end on the ventral. Covering angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows all around the edge of the flake, and is only lacking at the site of initial trimming.
