Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey semi-translucent flint, of good quality, knife. Plano-convex knapped blade, bearing three long blade removal scars on the dorsal face, and a bulb of percussion on the ventral surface showing where the blade was removed from the core after these long flakes had been removed. This working was probably with hard hammer, but pressure flaked retouch appears along both long edges. The removal of long thin flakes and the selection of apt material tend to indicate an earlier Neolithic date; however, the plano-convex form anticipates later blade and fabricator forms, so a broader date-ran…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
White and pale grey Flint debitage. Long flake with three elongated flake removal scars on its dorsal aspect along with a later chip, and a possible small bulb of percussion at one end on its ventral side, showing where it was subsequently removed from the core. Although shaped as if to make a piercing point, the object bears no retouch to confirm that this use was intended. Reworking would have given a more durable point; though now sharp at its ends, this object would not retain them if it were used as an awl. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 8000-4000 BC. Length: 49.4mm, Width…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Dark grey flint tranchet axehead. Sub-rectangular flake of ovate section with two broad parallel flakes struck from either side and with angled flakes trimmed from either side at one end to form a cutting edge. The other end is flat, forming a butt. Dense milky patina has developed over all struck surfaces, indicating the object has endured prolonged exposure after its deposition. Suggested date: Early Mesolithic, 10,000-7000 BC. Length: 62.9mm, Width: 31.1mm, Thickness: 22.0mm, Weight: 39.56gms.

Pale brown flint with cortex, knife, as kindly identified by the finder. Leaf-shaped flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of its ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a long curved edge. Misty patina suggests the object was exposed to a calcareous environment for a period after its deposition. High quality mottled grey-brown semi-translucent flint Blade (identified by finder). A flint knife made from a long slender blade flake, approaching plano-convex form. Two long flakes have been removed to form the convex side and both ends have been retouched by pressure flaking. Nicks along the longer edges probably arise from post-depositional damage. Suggested date: early Neolithic, 3500-2900 BC. Length: 38.37mm, Width: 14.31mm, Thickness: 4.38mm, Weight: 2.58gms.

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Dark grey flint with cortex, good quality, perhaps collected from East Coast. End Scraper (identified by finder). A concavo-convex flake; the first working was removal of a flake from the concave side of this object before it was detached from the core by a hard hammer strike. Hammer and pressure flaking from the concave face then made a durable semi-circular working surface along the outer edge. Light retouch may have been carried around the remaining straight edge, working from the same side. Suggested date: Later Neolithic, 2500-2100BC. Length: 37.92mm, Width: 25.6m…

Grey and blue mottled semi-translucent flint with patch of cortex. Blade. Plano-convex knife, made from a long leaf-shaped flake. A patch of cortex remains on the convex surface, along with about nine long flake removal scars. A zone of diagonal wear or polish appears close to the cortex. Damage on the flatter side of the blade appears to be recent. Suggested date: Neolithic, 3500-2100. Length: 56.17mm, Width: 22.23mm, Thickness: 5.8mm, Weight: 7.61gms.

Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cloudy brown flint or chert of lower quality, with cortex across one face Scraper (identified by finder). A broad flat flake from the outside of a core, with hammer working from that (dorsal) side, producing a ragged edge around the tool. More limited zones of pressure flaking from the same side produced a more stable edge in a shallow cut-out zone along the edge, and pressure flaking from both sides has sharpened a further two limited zones. The overall impression is of a skilled worker investing the minimum necessary effort. Suggested date: Neolithic, 3500-2100BC. L…

Dark grey flint with heavy white patina overall. Blade (identified by finder). An elongated flake bearing four long flake removal scars on one face, and a ripple from percussion on the other. This may indicate the skilful removal of long flakes from a core, followed by the striking of this flake from that core. One end of the object bears a triangular point, perhaps to serve as an awl; the other end has been recently struck revealing dark flint beneath white patina. Suggested date: Neolithic, 3500-2100 BC. Dark grey-brown flint with surface iron staining. Irregular flake with rough hard hammer working, limited pressure flaking retouch as well as probably recent damage on its edges, all producing a crudely saw toothed edge, and a limited zone of more delicate pressure-flaked retouch on striking platform. Suggested date: Later Neolithic, 2500-2100 BC. Length: 75.42mm, Width: 45mm, Thickness: 14.6mm, Weight: 47.73gms.

Object type: FABRICATOR
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Blue-grey flint Possible Fabricator or 'slug knife'. Irregularly shaped plano-convex tool. The object is apparently made from a thick and elongated flake with traces of the removal of long thin blades before it was detached from core, and bears extensive hard hammer reworking on both sides, producing an irregularly tapered tool. There is also limited pressure-flaked retouch on the striking platform of the original flake. Suggested date: Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age, 2500-1500 BC. Length: 56.91mm, Width: 22.42mm, Thickness: 10.51mm, Weight: 13.01gms.

Low quality grey and brown mottled flint or chert, with cortex Flake. Irregular flake with light pressure-flaked retouch along one edge; this retouch is executed on the dorsal or outer side of the flake; conchoidal fractures on the ventral surface may represent post-depositional damage. Brown flint with cortex, and heavy patina on one side. Debitage. Struck flint bearing four or more conchoidal fractures from removal of flakes with a hard hammer, an operation which post-dated the accumulation of a heavy patina on one unworked face. Though conceivably intended as an awl, this object bears no discernible trace of use as such. Suggested date: Possibly Bronze Age, 2150-800BC. Length: 50.62mm, Width: 30.49mm, Thickness: 15.3mm, Weight: 13.12gms.

Mid grey flint with cortex on one side, patinated on the other. Possible Scraper (identified by finder). A thumbnail scraper probably made from a naturally-formed pot-lid flake; cortex appears on one side, and patination on the ventral surface. The patina is interrupted by light, possibly pressure-flaked, retouch of about half the edge of flake, on the ventral surface only. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2150-1500 BC.
