Record ID: NLM-7AA001
Object type: CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint possible core fragment. A small chunk with narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and  with a rounded or bulbar ventral surface. A creamy patina across all struck surfaces suggests the object has subsequently endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment, and iron-spotting may suggest its incorporation in gravel. More than one episode of working is possible. As the find-spot is not on chalk the patina may hint that it has been imported. Suggested date: possibly Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC Length: 37.9mm, Width: 26.6mm, Thickness: 13.5mm, Weight: 11.70gms

Pale grey flint core. A small irregular chunk with scars from multangular flake removal. A creamy patina across all struck surfaces suggests the object has subsequently endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment, and iron-spotting may suggest its incorporation in gravel. As the find-spot is not on chalk the patina may hint that it has been imported. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Height: 31.4mm, Width: 34mm, Thickness: 22.2mm, Weight: 24.21gms

Flint pebble with cortex, core. A chunk with broad parallel flakes detached by unidirectional working from a flat striking platform. A dense creamy patina across all struck surfaces suggests the object has subsequently endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment, and iron-spotting may suggest its incorporation in gravel. As the find-spot is not on chalk the patina may hint that it has been imported. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Height: 34.3mm, Width: 35.5mm, Thickness: 26.2mm, Weight: 45.09gms

Dark grey flint with re-formed cortex, core. A pyramidal core with long narrow parallel flakes removed by unidirectional working from a broad flat platform. The working was not carried all round the object. A dense milky patina has extended across all struck surfaces and may argue a subsequent long period of exposure to a calcareous environment. Where this appears on the Wolds it is a local environmental effect and is very common. However, such patination is rare in the assemblage presented from Scotter, so this object may have been imported, perhaps in gravel or with chalk used to mar…

Opaque pale grey flint possible core fragment. A thin sub-rectangular flake with broad and narrow long flakes removed by unidirectional working from a flat platform. Both the long edges may be serrated, though this is more easily felt than observed; along one long side the putative serration may be accompanied by very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect. The ventral surface is flat. If not a core, this might alternatively be a plano-convex knife, perhaps unfinished. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic, 7000-3500 BC Length: 51.4mm, Width: 28.2mm, Thickne…

Mottled grey and brown flint core. A small chunk which bears multiple scars from multangular hard hammer working. There is more than one episode represented, as one struck facet had accumulated a light patina before it was partially removed by later working. Grey flint with cortex, core fragment. Probably part of a pyramidal core, with narrow parallel flakes removed by unidirectional working from a flat platform; one or two sides appear to have parted from the object during this activity. The penultimate episode seems to have been the removal of another thin narrow flake from the left [as illustrated] side of the striking platform. The lack of subsequent patination might suggest this object to have then been incorporated into a sealed deposit. Suggested date: possibly Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Pale grey flint with cortex, core. A thick flake with broad flakes removed three quarters of the way around, with some but not all removals working from a broad flat oval striking platform. Rust spotting may arise from incorporation into gravels. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Height: 14.8mm, Width: 35.2mm, Thickness: 26mm, Weight: 15.11gms

Flint core. Pyramidal chunk with narrow and broad parallel flakes removed by unidirectional working from a broad flat striking platform. One face of the chunk is flat, perhaps from its initial detaching or at the end of its use. One corner is also battered. A dense white patina across all struck surfaces suggests the object has subsequently endured exposure to a calcareous environment. Were this environment not to occur locally, it might hint that this object had been imported together with chalk brought to marl fields or for road construction. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-400…

Orange flint with iron-stain spotting, core, as kindly identified by the finder. A chunk with opposed concave faces and with scars from the probably unidirectional removal of long parallel flakes using a now restricted striking platform. The staining may suggest the object was subsequently incorporated into gravels. Suggested date: Late Palaeolithic, 40000-10000 BC Height: 45.5mm, Width: 44.5mm, Thickness: 29mm, Weight: 49.26gms

Orange iron-stained flint, core, as kindly identified by the finder. A thin chunk with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side using a small platform at one end, and with a markedly concave ventral surface below the platform. Iron staining suggests the object has subsequently been incorporated into gravels. Suggested date: Late Palaeolithic, 40000-10000 BC. Orange iron-stained flint core fragment, as kindly identified by the finder. A broad chunk with broad and narrow flake removal scars from probably unidirectional working from a large striking platform. The finder suggests an early date, indicated not only by the form of the object but also its surface coloration. Probably chipped in deep antiquity. Dark grey flint with re-forming cortex spot, core. A thin chunk with scars from bipolar flake removal, and with a grey misty patina over all struck surfaces suggesting a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. This is removed by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect, probably indicating the reuse of a previously discarded item. The retouch was not itself patinated, so the object may have been incorporated into a sealed context shortly after the final reuse. Grey flint core. Pyramidal or conical core with broad and narrow flakes removed by unidirectional working from a broad oval striking platform. A white patina subsequently developed overall, suggesting the object then endured a long exposure to a calcareous environment. Flint core, as kindly identified by the finder. A thick chunk with broad and narrow flakes removed by principally unilateral working from a large near-semi-circular striking platform. A dense creamy patina then accumulated overall, suggesting a period of exposure to a calcareous environment, while iron spotting may indicate the subsequent inclusion of the object in gravels. Suggested date: possibly Neolithic [surface condition might point to an earlier date], 4000-2350 BC Height: 26.7mm, Width: 38.3mm, Thickness: 30.3mm, Weight: 26.89gms

Dark grey flint core fragment, as kindly identified by the finder. Subtriangular chunk with broad and narrow parallel flakes removed by probably unidirectional working; the last draft appears to have detached a large flake from the ventral or inner part of the core – as viewed from its striking platform. A dense white patina accumulated on all struck surfaces thereafter, suggesting the object then endured a long period of exposure to a calcareous environment. The underlying tint of the flint is revealed by recent chips. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC Height: 33.5m…

Mid brown flint with probably re-formed cortex, with broad and narrow parallel flakes removed by unidirectional working from a now slightly concave striking platform. The lack of patina and fresh edges to the scars may hint at the inclusion of the object in a sealed context shortly thereafter, from which it has only recently been disturbed with traces of [?]recent battering. Pale grey-buff flint with thick cortex, core. A small chunk with flakes removed by essentially unidirectional working which entailed the removal of parallel flakes from one side using a flat striking platform.
