Possible discoidal knife, of off-white patinated flint, made from a “potlid” or natural thermal fracture with thin, weathered sandy coloured cortex to the dorsal face, the ventral face is a typical thermal fracture. Potlid fractures like this with what appears to be retouch to the thin edges are usually dismissed as being not man-made, however in this instance the more curved edge of the two appears to have had a succession of bifacial flakes driven from it, in one spot the flakes pass through a fossil inclusion, in contrast, the straighter of the two ed…

A complete worked flint probable scraper of probable Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (c.4500-1500BC). Description: The object is broadly square in plan and rectangular in cross section. It is a tertiary flake of translucent grey brown flint. The ventral face is convex with a striking platform, bulb of percussion and bulbar scar; with conchoidal ripple marks also visible. There is some long, sub-parallel, low angle retouch on one edge. The dorsal face is concave with long, sub-parallel, semi-abrupt retouch at the distal end. Secondary, hard hammer struck flake, of unpatinated semi-translucent grey flint with slight iron stains to small areas of the edges, thin, sandy coloured cortex (also with patches of iron stains) to one lateral edge, thin edges damaged irregularly. Likely to be residual debitage, Neolithic to Bronze Age, 4,000 to 700 BC.

Flint possible scraper. A small chunk with a flat flake struck from its dorsal side and a bulbar ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect may follow a curving edge, though if so, it has been battered. A dense patina overall suggests the object has endured exposure to a calcareous environment. As the find-spot is not on chalk it may have been imported, perhaps with marl or building materials. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 27.5mm, Width: 33.2mm, Thickness: 12.3mm, Weight: 10.99gms

Black flint debitage fragment. A small irregular chunk with parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side. A dense white patina has accumulated across all surfaces, removed by later damage to expose the underlying tint of the flint. The patina may suggest the object has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment. As the find-spot is not on chalk it may have been imported. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Height: 20.4mm, Width: 22.9mm, Thickness: 10.8mm, Weight: 5.80gms

Pale grey and patinated flint possible debitage. Six irregular flakes [of lengths 44.3mm-19.3mm] with scars from the trimming of flakes from their dorsal sides, and the largest – which is also lightly heat-damaged - with angled scalar retouch across the bulb on its ventral surface. Three other flakes including the smallest fragment have bulbar ventral surfaces. Where a creamy patina has developed across the struck surfaces the objects may have been imported from an area where they had endured exposure to a calcareous environment; the find-spot is not on chalk. Flint possible scraper. A small thick sub-rectangular chunk with narrow flakes removed from its rounded dorsal surface and with a concave hollow on its ventral surface which would serve as a thumb rest; one side is flat. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one short straight edge, here taken to have been the working edge. Possible flint piercer/arrowhead, of prehistoric dates. Due to its shape, and some retouching, it was likely earmarked to be a tool, but discarded pre-usage. The dark colour of the flint, and its workmanship suggest that it is likely of Neolithic origin. The flint is 90% of a white cloudy patina, and 10% of its surfaces showed signs of iron staining. This is a common occurence on the Land's End peninsula, where we regularly find flint scatters, representing extremely long periods of occupation. Dimensions: Length, 56.21mm, width (max), 25.39mm, thickness, 5.85mm. Weight: 10g.

A Neolithic or early Bronze Age scraper struck from a secondary flake of grey flint, 43.6mm in length. The distal end and adjacent parts of the long sides have short abrupt retouch to define a working edge. A small area of buff coloured cortex is retained on one side of the distal end of the dorsal surface. The proximal end tapers to a small striking platform.
