Toffee-coloured red-brown flint backed blade. A thin sub-ovoid flake with long narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side, and with a flat if rippled ventral surface. Invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the longest curved convex edge. Similar retouch executed from the ventral aspect is restricted to the upper end of the same cutting edge. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Object type: BARBED AND TANGED ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Pale grey flint barbed and tanged arrowhead. Arrowhead bearing covering angled scalar retouch across both sides, with two long cutting edges converging at a sharp and intact point, with two small barbs flanking a slightly broader tang at its wider end. The long edges are finely serrated as a result of the finishing, which would make them very effective for use as a hunting arrowhead intended to promote blood loss from a stricken quarry. The fir-tree form and fine finish recalls a series of lozengiform points from East Yorkshire round barrows which, though perhaps typologically project…

Record ID: NLM-BCCAC3
Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Pale buff flint possible knife fragment. Perhaps one half of a thin oval flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a flat or very slightly concave ventral surface. A long narrow flake is struck from along a putative cutting edge. The form might also suggest an over-sized barbed and tanged arrowhead, though the concave ventral surface would probably interfere with flight if it were so deployed. Milky patina suggests the object to have endured exposure to a calcareous environment; the break or breaks [a smaller break appears at the base/butt end] is more recent. Sugge…

Pale grey flint scraper with cortex, possibly collected from the East Coast, scraper, as kindly identified by the finder. Oval flake with a bulb on its ventral surface, and with cortex trimmed by angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect to follow the curving edge, and also to lightly trim a butt opposite the putative working edge. This was followed by the development of a milky patina suggesting the object has been exposed to a calcareous environment. The patina is locally removed by adventitious recent chips. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 36.3mm, W…

Pale grey flint scraper, as kindly identified by the finder. Thin oval flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side to form a concave thumb rest, and with a bulbar ventral surface adjacent to a small striking platform. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curved edge of the object, the resultant working edge being interrupted by a recent chip. County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Pale grey flint with re-formed cortex, possibly collected from the East Coast, scraper, as kindly identified by the finder. Oval pebble with angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curved edge; cortex is left untrimmed along a flatter side to serve as a butt enabling pressure to be brought to bear on the working edge. The ventral surface is bulbar. Milky patina suggests the object was subsequently exposed to a calcaraeous environment. Suggested date: Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age, 2500-1600 BC Length: 26mm, Width: 31.4mm, Thickness: 9.5mm, Weight: 9.69gms

Pale grey flint scraper, as kindly identified by the finder. Oval flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb on its ventral surface adjacent to a striking platform which served as the butt of the tool. Angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curved edge to provide a robust sharpened cutting edge. The form approaches that of a thumbnail scraper. A white milky patina may suggest the object was subsequently exposed to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age, 2500-1600 BC Length: 31.1mm, Width: 26…

Pale grey flint with cortex spot, scraper, as kindly identified by the finder – its use as a discoid knife seems possible. Broad flakes have been struck from an oval flake with a bulbar ventral surface. Angled scalar retouch following the curved edge was executed from the dorsal aspect. Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two large pieces of debitage, a primary chunk and a secondary flake of possible Neolithic to Bronze Age date, 4000 BC - 1000 BC. The chunk has a blade removal from the dorsal face which is not patinated, and some removals form the right side which are, suggesting two periods of use. The flake has cortex on the proximal end. There is probable edge damage on the distal end, which also retains some cortex, suggesting it may have been utilised. There are also a few removals at the left side.
