A Neolithic flint scraper (3500-2000 BC). Multiple flakes have been removed from the surface of the scraper and there is some retouch. The scraper measures 32.2mm long, 19.7mm wide and 5.5mm thick. It weighs 4.22 grams. The dimensions of the scraper suggest that it was a thumb scraper: designed to be held between thumb and forefinger. Scrapers like this would have had many different functions in the Neolithic, as they were very useful tools, used for example for skinning animals, removing the fatty deposited from hinds and much more.

Small flint waste flake / debitage probably dating from the Neolithic period (2900 - 2100 BC). The flake is broadly oval in both plan and profile. It has number of regular facets caused by flaking and also plough-damage on the upper (dorsal) face of the flake. The lower (ventral) face has very little evidence of flaking. It does however have a clear bulb of percussion and the point of percussion (which created the flake) can be clearly identified. There is no evidence of cortex (the rough outer skin of the flint nodule) present on either face. This suggests that this flake comes from t…

A flint thumbnail scraper, made from a retouched tertiary waste flake. The ventral face is very slightly convex and the bulb of purcussion appears to have been removed by a recent break. The dorsal face has three flaking scars, surrounded on three edges by semi-abrupt to abrupt retouch. The distal end has a slightly rolled edge resulting from later damage probably through ploughing or similar action. There is a large flake missing at the proximal end, which appears to have occured naturally following deposition. The flint is green-grey-whitish in colour, with a milky patina which has o…

A large flint scraper. This bulky flint has very abrupt retouch down its proximal edge to form a crude scraper. There is still some cortex remaining at the centre of the dorsal side and is probably a secondary flint. It has a dark grey, brown patina and measures 39.8mm x 30.8mm x 14.8mm, weighing 19.04g. This scraper is dated to the Neolithic due to its abrupt retouch and large size; something typical of the Neolithic.

A tabular scraper with retouch only evident on the distal surface. The flint orange-brown in colour and retains cortex on the distal surface, although there is no patina. This is an unusual flint as there is a ?natural hole through the centre of the scraper which appears to pre-date the retouching – this hole has re-cortified, and with the tabular retouching the artefact at first looks like a spindle whorl. It is unknown whether the presence of the hole was ever utilised for hanging or securing the scraper by rope or string. The scraper is 35.53mm in diameter and 10.58mm thick and we…

A small flint scraper of probable Early Neolithic date (3500 BC - 2900 BC). Length: 41.6mm; width: 32.7mm; thickness: 8.1mm; weight: 12.35g. The scraper is sub-oval in plan. It consists of a flat piece of flint with ripples on both sides. One end and side of one face has been re-touched to create a working surface forming a semi-abrupt angle with short scaled removals. Close to this worked end there is a small amount of light brown cortex. The remaining part of the implement is of varying shades of mottled grey. There is no bulb of percussion or striking platform.

A discoidal flint scraper dating from the Neolithic period. It is 41mm in diameter and 12.1mm thick. It weighs 17.37gm. The flint is dark grey and opaque. There is a striking platform at the proximal end, but the rest of the convex edges are retouched with semi-abrupt and abrupt removals. There are also some invasive removals. There are some chips in the edge which are later damage. Similar scrapers can be seen in figure 53 of “Prehistoric Flintwork” by Butler (2005).

A flint side and end scraper of probable late Mesolithic to Neolithic date. The scraper is formed on a tertiary flake of dark brown-grey flint, flecked with white in places. The flake is sub-retangular in form, but rounded at the distal end and is slightly curved in profile (when looking at it from the side). The ventral face is unworked, with a large butt and prominent ripple lines suggesting that a large, hard hammer was used. A small portion of the proximal end may have broken away following deposition, however, as the break there is fresh and sharp still. The dorsal face has a larg…

A scraper or knife of probable late Mesolithic to Neolithic date. The implement is sub-rectangular in form. The ventral face is smooth and unworked, apart from a few removals at the proximal end. The dorsal face has a long ridge running longitudinally, slightly to the right of the centre. On the right side of this a small amount of cortex remains, whilst to the left of this a large flake has been removed creating a sharp edge. Semi-abrupt, long, subparallel retouch can be seen on the edge of the proximal end and along the right edge of the dorsal face. The flint is mid grey-brown in co…

Scraper formed from a broad flake with extensive damage and possible re-use. The scaper was probably originaly of the horseshoe form, i.e. an oval, almost circular, flat shape, common in the Late Neolithic. However the distal end has broken leaving an irregular shape. The scraper was formed on a large tertiary flake struck form a prepared platform. The probable distal face has arises from previous removals but also an extensive area of damage where a piece has sheered off and left hackled damage, possible from casual use to hammer something. The probable ventral face is covered in very…

Flint end and side scraper of probable Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date. The scraper is sub-rectangular in form, utilising a tertiary flake. The butt is wide and slightly concave. The bulb is diffuse and the ripple lines discreet. All suggesting that a large, soft hammer was used. There are two large flaking scars on the dorsal face, with a few smaller ones at both the proximal and distal ends. There is a small amount of abrupt to semi-abrupt, long, scaled retouch on the right edge and a little abrupt to semi-abrupt, short, scaled retouch in places at the distal end. The flint is lig…

Horse-shoe shaped, probably Late Neolithic, flint scraper. Almost circular in plan it is made on a promary flake with cortext covering all unretouched areas of the dorsal face. There is a prominant bulb of percussion on the ventral face and the point of strike is damaged. There is semi-invasive, semi-abrupt, parallel retouch around the distal end and both sides on the dorsal face. There is also a smallarea of scalar retouch on the ventral face to the right of the bulb of percussion which creates a small notch, possibly for grip.
Semi transluscent mid brown flint with a large area of p…

A flint side and end scraper made from a very large secondary flake. It is oval in plan, has an S-shaped cross section and relatively flat ventral and dorsal faces. The bulb-of-percussion has been removed and there are no obvious percussion waves on the ventral face which is covered in starch fractures. The dorsal face shows signs of previous removals of other large flakes, with small areas of cortex remaining on the arises (less than 5% of the face). There is short-medium abrupt scalar retouch around 75% of the edge of the scraper. The remaining edge is hackled from repeated hammerin…

A probable side- and end-scraper, formed from a large tertiary flake. The bulb-of-percussion and striking platform have been removed but percussion waves remain on the ventral face. The are multiple arises from previous removals on the dorsal face. There is abrupt scalar retouch and use-wear on the distal end, use-wear down both sides and short scalar retouch down the right edge on the ventral face. A notch has been created by abrupt retouch to one side at the proximal end, leaving a tang, which may have been hafting. The exact purpose of the tool is unclear but it maybe a scraper. It…

Complete 'D' shaped scraper knapped from grey black flint and dating from the late Neolithic period 2500-2100BC, possibly a Riley Type 5 (Bond, C. Plate 5.112 and 5.113). The scraper is complete, made from a short, round flake with retouch along the total distal and halfway up the two mesial edges. Both the ventral and dorsal faces are very smooth with even ripple marks. Scrapers could have many uses from scraping the fat off animal skins, to scraping the bark off arrow shafts. The length is 42mm, width 34mm, thickness 6mm and the weight is 14.21g.
