Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A barbed and tanged arrowhead, formed by knapping. It is made of a pale semi- transluscent flint with some inclusions. It is slightly flatter on one side then the other, and the tip of one of the barbs is missing. Having been found near a beach it has been worn so no sharp edge remains, but the shape is consistent. Arrowheads such as these, see also NMGW-24C12C, are classified as Sutton Type B (Green 1980) are commonly associated with the emergence of the Beaker phenomenon in Britain.
Dimensions: It is 21mm long and 16mm wide, it weighs 1.53g

A later Neolithic flint arrowhead of oblique type struck from a tertiary flake of brown flint, c. 3000-2100 BC.
The cross section is asymmetrical and triangular with a flat and a convex face. One long edge has retouch along what appears to be the line of a break to refine a blunted edge running to the sharp point. The base has long low angle sub parallel retouch and is slanted.

Flint possible arrowhead. Lozengiform or rhomboid thick flake with broad flakes struck from both dorsal and ventral surfaces; an unusually symmetrical object although thicker than the leaf-shaped arrowheads of the early Neolithic. Either end could have served as point or cutting edge, and fine serrations appear on the curved end and perhaps along the sides as well, so this may have been mounted ‘inverted’ as an oblique arrowhead. A dense white patina may suggest the object has endured long exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: possibly Late Neolithic, 2700-2…

Complete Leaf-shaped arrowhead, of Green, H. S. (1980) type 4B, the closest being L in the examples for this type. It is of Pale grey flint with a lighter coloured inclusion to one side, all the surfaces are patinated a faint buff colour. Both faces are entirely modified by invasive pressure flaking, no surface of the original “blank” for this arrowhead survives but it would appear the bulb of percussion on the flake this was made from was originally orientated towards the point as it is slightly thicker at this end than the base. Early Neolithic, 4,000 to 3,000 BC.

A near complete Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged flint arrowhead (2500-1500 BC) This arrowhead has been knapped from a pale brown / grey coloured piece of flint. It is broadly sub-triangular in plan and lentoid in cross section. It is broadly symmetrical in shape with one barb and the tang being complete. The other barb is broken close to the body of the arrowhead by a clean break or snap. Both the long sides of the arrowhead have been retouched to create sharp edges.
Similar flint barb and tanged arrowheads are associated with the Beaker phase of the Late / f…

The arrowhead is made from a tertiary flake of flint that is cream in colour, probably made from local beach pebble. Almost the entire arrowhead survives barring the tips of each barb and a small break at the tip which probably occurred when it was fired as the breaks have the same patination as the rest of the arrow indicating this occurred a long time ago. Each surface is bifacially worked with covering, scaled, low angle retouch.

The arrowhead is made from a sub-triangular tertiary flake of mottled light to dark grey flint. the object has a barb projecting from the left side of the base on the dorsal face. The dorsal face shows signs of abrupt parallel to sub-parallel retouch along the left hand edge and in the formation of the barb. The ventral face does not show any signs of retouch.

Large barbed and tanged arrowhead of Green, H. S. (1980) type Green Low with a square tang and drooping barbs longer than the tang, one barb is missing, as is the very tip of the point, both broken ends look glossy and are likely to be ancient, not dull and recent, the damage was probably as a result from being fired or old post-depositional damage. The flint is mottled grey and is unpatinated, the reconstructed length would be around 53 mm, this rather large, but not the largest recorded; the Ballyclare types can reach c. 85 mm in length.

Flint. Probably an Earlier Neolithic arrowhead dating to c.4000-3300 BC.
Low angle, stepped covering retouch on one side. Pronounced bulb of percussion with faint ripples, indicating a soft hammer. Short flat platform. This flint object has a white patina, indicating a long-term burial in an alkaline (chalk) environment that has recorticated the surface of the flint.

Grey flint oblique arrowhead fragment. Sub-triangular flake [tip lost] with a broad flake struck from its dorsal side and with a slightly convex ventral surface. Angled intrusive scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the shorter of the opposed long edges, with very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect following the longer. The shorter side is taken to be the butt where an arrow shaft would be sited. Flint oblique arrowhead, as kindly identified by the finder. Thin sub-triangular flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and a flat ventral surface with a tiny bulb behind the point of the putative arrowhead. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the longest side to form a cutting edge; the shaft of an arrow would presumably be set in the basal angle. Dense white patina may suggest its subsequent exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: Late Neolithic, 2500-2350 BC

Grey flint oblique arrowhead, as kindly identified by the finder. A thin sub-triangular flake with a broad flake struck from its dorsal side and a positive hinge fracture on its smooth ventral surface. The ventral face is slightly convex and does not appear to be worked apart from a few areas of low-angle retouch around the point.
