Grey flint with cortex and dense creamy patina, backed blade. Flake with broad and parallel flakes trimmed from the dorsal side and with a bulb on the ventral. Short scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a curved edge, which is perhaps truncated by breakage in antiquity. The cortex appears to be retained to permit the exertion of pressure on the back or butt. A chip at the bulb is recent damage. The dense patina indicates the object endured long exposure after breakage and deposition. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC.

Flint of uncertain tint, entirely covered by dense creamy patina, backed blade. Triangular section flake with a cutting edge bearing short abrupt retouch, presumably executed from the dorsal aspect, and with further large concavities arising from subsequent fortuitous impacts; both ends truncated, possibly deliberately. The extent of damage and patina may argue the long exposure of this object after its deposition. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC.

Blue grey flint with cortex and misty patches of patina, backed blade. Flake with long narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and a rippled surface on the ventral surface. The accumulation of patina over struck surfaces is disrupted by short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect, which has not itself collected patina. This may suggest the reuse of a flake after a period of exposure, and the incorporation of the object into a sealed deposit shortly after its final deposition. Grey flint with dense misty patina, backed blade. Flake with broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a low bulb on the ventral. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge, probably to blunt it, and appears more intermittently along the opposite long edge. The retouch interrupts patina, so the re-use of a struck flake appears likely. The early Neolithic period may embrace both initial and secondary working. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC.

Pale grey flint with light misty patina patches, backed blade. Flake with a low bulb trimmed on the ventral surface and with very short abrupt retouch along part of one slightly concave long edge executed from the dorsal aspect. The retouch disrupts patina possibly acquired during a period of exposure, and appears intended to blunt the back of a small blade, though both primary and secondary working could be accommodated by the Early Neolithic period. Trapezoid flake with a negative pot-lid frost fracture and a smooth convex surface on its ventral side; hard hammer strike has trimmed one side to produce a flat back; the cutting edge is indicated by very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect, following one long edge. The ventral surface has also been trimmed with the removal of broad thin flakes, and is polished by subsequent wear. This might alternatively be viewed as a reworked fragment from a discoid or plano-conv…

Grey flint with cortex backed blade. A thick oval-ended flake with part of the cortex trimmed by hard hammer strike, and with a prominent bulb on its ventral surface. Creamy dense and lighter misty patinas formed over the resultant surfaces. This was removed along one straight edge by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect, and by battering at one end on the ventral surface. The cortex along the opposite edge was retained, perhaps as a butt for a new cutting edge. The formation and disruption of patina may indicate a flake damaged, worked and discarded, weathered in a ca…

Grey flint with cortex strip, backed blade. A long thick flake with the dorsal surface trimmed overall by hard hammer strike and with a concave rippled ventral surface. A strip of cortex was retained along part of one long edge. The opposite edge has a slight concavity bearing the small crescentic scars arising from edge-on impact. A complete lack of surface patina may indicate the subsequent incorporation of the object into a sealed context, where it remained until recently. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC.

Grey flint possible backed blade. A nearly square flake with a hinge fracture and a flat surface on its dorsal side and a bulb on the ventral. Misty white patina has developed over these surfaces, suggesting the flake was discarded and exposed to a calcareous environment. This patina was subsequently removed by short abrupt retouch executed from the [original] ventral aspect, forming a cutting edge on two adjacent sides. The Neolithic could presumably accommodate both primary and secondary working. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC

Grey-buff semi-translucent flint backed blade fragment. Sub-triangular flake with long angled scalar retouch covering the dorsal side and with a bulb at one corner of the ventral surface. The flat edge opposite the bulb and an immediately adjacent smooth positive hinge fracture may have permitted pressure to be brought to bear on what is now an irregular convex cutting edge. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC.

Opaque grey-buff flint with cortex spot, backed blade. A narrow sub-triangular flake with long parallel flakes removed from its dorsal side and with a flat ventral surface, together producing a triangular section. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge, and also forms a notch in the opposite edge. A lack of patina may suggest the object was subsequently incorporated into a sealed deposit. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC

Dark grey flint with cortex, possible backed blade. Small triangular-section flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a positive hinge fracture at one end of its ventral surface. Edge-on impacts impart a probably misleading impression of serration. The lack of patina on struck surfaces may point to the subsequent incorporation of the object into a sealed deposit. Cortex has re-formed over one plane of the dorsal side. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC

Grey flint with re-formed cortex, possibly collected from the East Coast, backed blade. A thick flake with broad flakes struck from part of its dorsal side, and with a bulbar ventral surface formed by a hinge fracture along one long side. The opposite long edge bears short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect, together with a separate zone of edge-on impact scars. This may have permitted the smooth edge of the hinge fracture to enable pressure to be brought to bear on the cutting edge. Grey-buff flint possibly collected from the East Coast, backed blade. A flake with a broad flake trimmed from cortex, perhaps re-formed, on its dorsal side, and with a bulbar ventral surface. Invasive angled scalar retouch trims further cortex from a limited zone on one shorter side, while very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a longer curving edge. The partially re-formed cortex on the opposite and shorter side may have helped pressure to be brought to bear on the putative cutting edge. Probably a swiftly improvised tool. Dark grey flint with cortex, backed blade. A small chunk of wedge-shaped profile which has experienced two episodes of hard hammer working. Periods of exposure to a calcareous environment promoted the formation of a dense white patina overall, from the difference in the two sides probably after the initial working of the flint, and again after its re-use. The cortex was retained opposite a putative cutting edge formed by these episodes, perhaps to permit force to be brought to bear on the working edge. The original tint of the flint is revealed by fortuitous chips. Suggested date: Neol…
