Object type: CORE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Pale grey flint core fragment. A chunk with broad parallel flakes removed by unidirectional hard hammer working; the striking platform has been lost to a later break. The lower edges of the core [as both used and as illustrated] are battered, suggesting its casual reuse in antiquity as a pounding tool. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Height: 51mm, Width: 44.6mm, Thickness; 27mm, Weight: 74.75gms

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey flint tranchet axehead. An oval biconvex flint object of oval section, with broad and narrow flakes trimmed from one [?the ventral] side by probably multangular angled retouch, and with covering retouch across the other [?dorsal]side comprising predominantly unidirectional angled retouch. The identification offered is suggested by the angled cutting edge which appears to have been formed by a single hard hammer strike. The aris between the two convex sides is lightly battered. Chips at the cutting edge are probably recent and adventitious damage. Suggested date: Early Mesolithic,…

Pale grey [?Wolds] flint fabricator. A narrow finger-shaped rod with covering angled scalar retouch across its dorsal side and with a flat and slightly concave ventral surface; chips from the underside are probably adventitious damage, though as the tint of the flint is identical at these sites it may have been incurred in antiquity. Brown translucent flint with cortex strip, lithic implement. A thin flake with broad and narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side, and with a prominent bulb on its ventral surface. The cortex strip is opposite a curving cutting edge with short scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect following it, suggesting a function as a backed blade. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect also trims the cortex itself, possibly to produce a very finely serrated implement. Pale brown flint with cortex, knife, as kindly identified by the finder. Leaf-shaped flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of its ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a long curved edge. Misty patina suggests the object was exposed to a calcareous environment for a period after its deposition. Grey flint with recortification on one flat side, core, as kindly identified by the finder. A small irregular chunk with broad flakes removed by probably multangular working, of which one episode used a flat face covered by creamy re-formed cortex as a striking platform. Grey flint knife. A trapezoid flake with broad and narrow flakes struck from its dorsal side, and with a bulb and ripples on its ventral surface. One end may then have received short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect along a curved end. A misty patina then formed over all surfaces, suggesting the object was discarded and endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. The patina was subsequently removed along one straight edge by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect. This represents a flake reused after its initial deposition; the Neolithic perio…
