A flint scraper. This example is manufactured from the naturally occuring flint deposits on the Yorkshire Wolds. The flint is of an inferior quality and is not utilised that often in the manufacture of lithic implements. This example has a white patina and a section of the cutting edge has been removed recently, no doubt by the plough.

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint blade dating from the late Neolithic period, 2500-2100BC. The blade has an exaggerated 'hinge fracture' leading to an unusual groove in the end of the blade. This happens when the core is hit with too much force and too far from the edge of the platform. The blade has two cutting edges and the end looks as though it may have had some use too, as it is retouched. The edges have some damage, probably through use as a cutting implement. The flint is mid-grey in colour. It is 38.48mm long, 17.05mm wide and 6.3mm thick. It weighs 5.28gm.

Flint implement, hardly patinated, probably an early Neolithic laurel-leaf shaped flint arrowhead (comp. Bond 2004, fig. 5.120). The object is in very good condition and hardly patinated. It was knapped from brown opaque, translucent flint and shows retouch on both ventral and dorsal faces as well as around the edges. The flint is gently curved and one edge seems to bear more retouch marks than the other. This suggests that although having the correct shape for a laurel-leaf shaped arrowhead, it could also have been a scraper and of slightly later Neolithic or even Early Bronze Age da…
