Record ID: SUSS-79A5E1
Object type: CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint core of Mesolithic to early Neolithic date c. 9000-3300 BC. The core is conical with a single hard hammered striking platform with a pronounced bulb of percussion and a large area of cortex remaining. There are four unidirectional long blade removals around the core, two with hinged terminations.  The flint is transluscent grey in colour. Dimensions: length: 48.2mm; width: 39.7mm; height: 39.1mm and weight: 50.59g.  This core was found in scattered spread of flint finds; see: SUSS-793E72 and SUSS-66C0E8

A flint core of suggested Mesolithic to early Neolithic date c. 9000-3300 BC. The small core is conical with a single striking platform with regular unidirectional short flake removals around the core with some platform preparation; the point of the cone truncated. The flint is black in colour. Dimensions: length: 36.8mm; width: 27.8mm; height: 14.4mm and weight: 11.44g.  This core was found in scattered spread of flint finds; see: SUSS-79A5E1 and SUSS-66C0E8

Object type: ASSEMBLAGE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An assemblage of 7 incomplete struck flint blades (debitage) representing multiple periods of activity from the Mesolithic to early Neolithic periods c. 9000 BC - 3300 BC. The assemblage is composed of tertiary flakes; all of different shades of opaque black, opaque and translucent grey and translucent yellow. None show evidence of retouch. The largest black flake is hard hammer struck with a pronounced bulb of percussion. The rest are soft hammer struck, narrow blades of suggested Mesolithic to early Neolithic date c. 9000-3300BC.  Two cores were f…

Object type: CORE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Levallois core in fresh condition, of mottled grey flint, now lightly patinated a sandy colour. The flint has some linier thermal (frost) cracks within the flint, these are present on both faces though the flint seems quite stable, a small “potlid” thermal fracture has detached on the underside, at the bottom of this damage is a small, light grey patch of a coarse inclusion in the flint, this is the cause of this sub-discoidal thermal fracture at this point. The core has typical hard hammer centripetal flaking to both faces, one steeper than the other in the conventional …

Object type: TRANSVERSE ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A tertiary struck flake of orange brown flint, possibly a late Neolithic flint tranchet / chisel arrowhead, 30.9mm in length. The object has a triangular plan with short, low angle scaled retouch along both long edges and worked from both faces. The broad end / cutting edge of the flake feathers from a tranchet removal but is not further retouched.

Record ID: SUR-656631
Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A retouched tertiary flake of dark grey brown flint, probably of later Neolithic to Bronze Age date. The flake is trapezoidal with a projecting point on one corner of the distal edge. This edge has short abrupt retouch along its length with what appears to be a small burin removal at the tip of the point to refine it for use as a piercing or engraving tool.

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small Neolithic to early Bronze Age flint scraper struck from a dark grey-brown flint. A small patch of cortex is retained on the dorsal surface. The distal end is curved with semi abrupt parallel retouch refining a working edge. The proximal end of the dorsal surface has been reduced with long, intrusive parallel retouch.

Object type: AXE TRIMMING FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A curved flint flake, apparently removed from the cutting end of a Neolithic flaked axehead. The flake appears to represent a corner of the cutting end of the axehead and has a triangular cross section with removal scars on both sides and a concave inner surface which is the break from the tool. the low bulb-of-percussion and feathered ends to the flake suggest this was a deliberate, contemporary removal, probably for sharpening or finishing purposes.
