A small rectangular gun flint probably from a small handgun / firearm / pocket pistol of post medieval - modern date (1700-1850 AD). The flint is sub-square in plan and trapezoidal in profile and section. The flint is a light mottled grey colour. The dorsal face has been knapped / worked on all four sides; this work consists of creating sloping edges to give it a trapezoidal side view. The long edges are also retourched / trimmed with neat parallel sided removals. The ventral face retains the waves emanating outwards from the point of impact, but the bulb of percussion has been remove…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: MODERN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A modern (c. AD 1800-2010) flint scraper made on an ancient flake of uncertain prehistoric date. The scraper is broadly circular in plan with part of the platform and the buld retained. There is some re-cortication, through which the modern retouching is cut. The modern retouching is at the proximal tip and around the distal edge. It is possible that a farm worker (for example) may have created and used this scraper in Victorian (or even more modern) times. The Victorians also used to practice flint knapping; this example is of the incorrect shape to be a gun flint so was probably for…

A lithic implement; a flint annular ring which probably dates from the 19th or early 20th century. It is made of opaque tan flint and has scalar retouch. It weighs about 2g. This object has been identified by Hazel Martingel and is probably a rare survivor of the work of flint knappers during the early part of the 20th century. They were originally called 'fakes' but later 'replicas'. Bill Basham was one such flint knapper who made a flint necklace of rings very like this one. He also made a Flint alphabet! At the time, gunflints were made in Brandon in Suffolk and some of the skill…
