Flint debitage. Six tiny [of lengths between 24.5mm to 9.4mm] flakes with scars from the removal of narrow or parallel flakes from their dorsal sides, and with flat or bulbar ventral surfaces. A creamy patina across all struck surfaces suggests the objects have subsequently endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment, and iron-spotting may suggest their incorporation in gravel. As the find-spot is not on chalk the patina may hint that it has been imported. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC

Flint possible core fragment. A small chunk with narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a rounded or bulbar ventral surface. A creamy patina across all struck surfaces suggests the object has subsequently endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment, and iron-spotting may suggest its incorporation in gravel. More than one episode of working is possible. As the find-spot is not on chalk the patina may hint that it has been imported. Suggested date: possibly Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC

Pale grey-buff flint with cortex spot, debitage. Two small struck chips [length 23.4mm and 19.5mm]. The longer sub-triangular flake bears invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect and has a rippled ventral surface. The other was perhaps detached by working similar material and has a concave dorsal surface and a tiny bulb behind a projecting nib. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC

Flint possible scraper. A small thick sub-rectangular chunk with narrow flakes removed from its rounded dorsal surface and with a concave hollow on its ventral surface which would serve as a thumb rest; one side is flat. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one short straight edge, here taken to have been the working edge. A creamy patina across all struck surfaces suggests the object has subsequently endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. Probably mid-brown flint debitage. A thin flake with narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a flat ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge. Fire-crazed overall. A creamy patina lost at a chip at one end [which reveals the tint of the flint] may suggest that the object has endured exposure to a calcareous environment, and hence that it may have been imported to its find spot, which is not on chalk. Patinated flint debitage with some iron-stained spots. Seven thin flakes [of lengths between 33.8mm and 20.3mm], all with long narrow parallel flakes struck from their dorsal surfaces. The dorsal surfaces are either flat or, for the three smallest flakes, slightly concave. The patina may indicate the objects have endured exposure to a calcareous environment. As the find-spot is not on chalk, this might hint at the importation of chalk and flints, as for building, road-making or marling, in which artefacts were accidentally incorporated. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000BC

Possible flint piercer/arrowhead, of prehistoric dates. Due to its shape, and some retouching, it was likely earmarked to be a tool, but discarded pre-usage. The dark colour of the flint, and its workmanship suggest that it is likely of Neolithic origin. The flint is 90% of a white cloudy patina, and 10% of its surfaces showed signs of iron staining.
This is a common occurence on the Land's End peninsula, where we regularly find flint scatters, representing extremely long periods of occupation.
Dimensions: Length, 56.21mm, width (max), 25.39mm, thickness, 5.85mm. Weight: 10g.

A secondary core trimming or rejuvenation flake of Mesolithic or later date, struck from a dark grey flint and 42.5mm in length. The flake is curved, with a small striking platform at the proximal end with a low bulbar scar suggesting soft-hammer removal. There are a number of parallel removal scars on the proximal half of the dorsal surface, including one which has resulted in a hinge fracture. A large patch of brown coloured cortex remains on the curved distal end.

A Neolithic or early Bronze Age scraper struck from a secondary flake of grey flint, 43.6mm in length. The distal end and adjacent parts of the long sides have short abrupt retouch to define a working edge. A small area of buff coloured cortex is retained on one side of the distal end of the dorsal surface. The proximal end tapers to a small striking platform.

A retouched flake of Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date, c. 4000-1600 BC. The chert is light grey in colour with some white inclusions and is opaque. It is a secondary flake with a small area of cortex remaining at the distal end. In plan the flake is sub-triangular, with a narrow striking platform at a pointed proximal end and a wide distal end showing a previous flake removal scar at the base. On the dorsal surface there are previous flake removal scars. Along one edge there is short, stepped, semi-abrupt retouch. On the opposing edge…

A thumb nail scraper of Early Bronze Age date, c. 2350-1600 BC. The flint is dark grey in colour and mostly opaque. It is a tertiary flake and in plan the scraper is sub-circular. There are pronounced coinchoidal waves of percussion on the ventral surface and a negative hinge fracture at the distal end. On the dorsal surface there is covering, scaled, semi-abrupt retouch.
