Possible discoidal knife, of off-white patinated flint, made from a “potlid” or natural thermal fracture with thin, weathered sandy coloured cortex to the dorsal face, the ventral face is a typical thermal fracture. Potlid fractures like this with what appears to be retouch to the thin edges are usually dismissed as being not man-made, however in this instance the more curved edge of the two appears to have had a succession of bifacial flakes driven from it, in one spot the flakes pass through a fossil inclusion, in contrast, the straighter of the two ed…

Complete discoidal knife, of Clarke. J.G.D. (1932a) Form II with a D-shaped plan, both faces are entirely covered with soft hammer invasive flake scars, overlapping the centre and effectively thinning the piece, all flakes are confidently struck with the flake scars with feather terminations or very slight hinges, to be expected on a thin biface with very flat faces, one scar has failed to remove a previous, slightly larger hinge and remains as a high point to the less convex butt edge. The more convex edge has been carefully ground and polished to form the main function…

Dark grey flint, possibly collected from the East coast, discoidal knife. A thin oval flake, possibly naturally formed by frost action as a pot lid fracture, bears a dense white patina across the ventral surface, suggesting that side had endured a long period of exposure to a calcareous environment. This patina is removed at the edge at one end by short abrupt retouch executed from the [original] ventral aspect, though a sufficiently long period had elapsed between the initial detaching of the flake and reworking to enable the patina to form. This narrow zone of retouch is extended al…

Small sub-oval discoidal knife, made from a primary flake, the dorsal face retains a central patch of thin yellowish to white cortex, all other surfaces (apart from the platform) are modified by invasive direct percussion, the ventral face appears to have no original surface of the “blank” flake this was made from extant; the flakes neatly overlap at the centre, there is a linear flaw to this face, the flake scars stop dead either side of this. The flint is unpatinated semi-translucent brown/grey. Early Bronze Age, 2,350 to 1,500 BC.

Honey-coloured flint possible discoidal knife fragment. A broad flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side by angled covering scalar retouch executed with hard hammer, and with a low bulb towards one end of an otherwise flat ventral surface. A curving side appears to represent the cutting edge; the opposite long edge was perhaps indented twice, introducing a crescentic appearance, though this side may have been chipped more recently to achieve this form. One end of the knife is also lost to probably recent damage. Formerly identified as a plano-convex knife; however, Ciorstai…

Grey flint with reformed cortex spot, probably discoid knife fragment. A thin flat flake with rounded edge bearing covering angled scalar retouch across both sides. A straight edge and an adjacent chip are both probably the result of a recent and fortuitous impact. Suggested date: Late Neolithic, 2700-2350 BC Length: 33.7mm, Width: 31.9mm, Thickness: 5.7mm, Weight: 6.13gms

Grey flint, appearing brownish under transmitted light, discoidal knife. A thin oval flake of lentoid section bearing covering angled scalar retouch across both its sides. Chipped at one end, probably recently. A lack of patination might hint at the recent disturbance of the object from a sealed context. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 35.3mm, Width: 28.5mm, Thickness: 7.6mm, Weight: 8.216gms.

Tertiary, hard hammer struck flake, of unpatinated slightly mottled dark grey flint of good quality, struck from a prepared core with semi-centripetal, over-lapping invasive flake scars to the rather flat dorsal face. The bulb of percussion has been removed transversely by very steep retouch struck from the dorsal face, all edges appear to have been damaged recently. Likely to be a unifacial variation of the discoidal knife. Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age.

Late Neolithic (4000 - 2500 BC) discoidal knife: The knife sub-oval and is knapped from a mottled dark brown flint which is opaque where it is more slender in thickness. It has been bi-facially worked with invasive, scaled, low-angled flake removals. Over half of both the dorsal and ventral surfaces have been polished, particularly one lateral edge and the distal edge. The edges are rounded with the polishing. Knapping has removed the bulb of percussion. It measures 100.30mm long, 72.55mm wide, 13.93mm thick and weighs 115.64g. Discoidal knives in Worcestershire are very rare, this i…

Grey flint discoid knife. Oval flake with broad parallel flakes struck from the dorsal side and a bulbar ventral; a hinge fracture on one side would permit the exertion of force when using the opposite, cutting, edge. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one half of the curving edge. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 27.5mm, Width: 24.9mm, Thickness: 7.4mm, Weight: 5.74gms.

An incomplete fragment from a polished flint discoidal knife of later Neolithic date (3000 - 2000 BC). The implement is broadly triangular in shape and lentoid in cross section. There is some uncertainty as to whether the artefact is complete having, it seems, been reworked from its original size in antiquity. The flint is a mid grey colour with mid white coloured inclusions. The knife has been bi-facially worked with invasive (almost covering ) scaled low angled flake removals. A distinct patch of cortex is present on the dorsal face. One edge has been polished with two distinct fac…

A bifacially worked flint tool which could loosely be termed a discoidal knife. The flint is pale grey with a heavy, matt, off-white patina and considerable iron staining. The implement is sub-circular in plan and has numerous flake removal scars on both faces. The flaking is mainly from the edges of the implement. The continuous cutting edge is straight,.The dorsal face is convex and the ventral face is much flatter, producing a plano-convex profile. Date: Neolithic - 3500 - 2100 BC Dimensions: 85 mm x 70 mm x 29 mm Weight: 166 g

Later Neolithic/ Early Bronze Age (3000-1500 BC) oval with rounded ends polished flint discoidal knife, measuring 77.85x64.69x11.29mm and weighing 69.06g. It has been damaged in antiquity and reworked at one of the shorter ends and on part of a long edge. The flint is grey in colour with medium patination spots. The discoidal knife has been bifacially worked and the very edges highly ground and polished to a point with c.3mm either sides of polished 'bevelling'. In cross-section, the discoidal knife is pointed oval. At one end the discoidal knife has broken but retouch has given …

Flint discoidal knife, semi-circular in plan and lozenge-shaped in section, with a polished curved back to the blade, which is also slightly convex. The knife has been bifacially reworked and the blade edge retouched and then polished along with the back which may have been for hafting or hand-held. It was no doubt polished for decorative reasons as well as practical ones. The flint is an orangey-brown colour and was probably derived from a locally mined flint nodule. The length to breadth ratio is about 3:2. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example of a discoidal knife with a p…
