Complete handaxe in rolled condition, of Wymer, J. J. (1999) type E now patinated orange, the recent chips and other damage shows the underlying flint to have originally been tones of grey. Very small and single edged, almost unifacial with most of the hard hammer struck flake scars to one face, the opposing face is mostly smooth in appearance, but there are the ridges left from a few, semi-invasive flake scars to one lateral edge and the butt, the flatter part is either from a natural thermal fracture, or the remains of the ventral surface of a large flake, the rolled and bettered con…

Small and neatly made complete handaxe in fairly fresh condition: - of Wymer, J. J. (1999) type E/J, of very glossy orange/brown patinated mottled flint, likely to have been of grey flint initially. The dorsal face has a stack of four hinged termination flakes, failed and repeated attempts to thin the apex in the middle of this face, with a further attempt at the bottom left (if viewed with the point uppermost) has also hinged. The ventral face is centripetally flaked to shape but has left the remnants of a large hard hammer struck bulb of percussion at the butt where the flakes didn&r…

Small, incomplete handaxe of Wymer, J. J. (1999) type E/?J, of light grey/brown misty patination over a dark chocolate brown colour, the point has been broken recently at an angle revealing that the flint was originally dark brown, some of the high points to the flake scars are iron stained from contact with agricultural machinery. All surfaces have been modified by flaking so no original surfaces of the “blank” nodule or thermal fracture this handaxe was made from remain. Lower Palaeolithic, 600,000 to 250,000 BC.

Possible small handaxe of Wymer, J. J.(1999) type E, of black flint now patinated dark brown with slight misty light grey colour to small parts of the hard hammer struck flake scars, the majority of the piece is a thin, flat, unmodified nodule with sandy and dark brown cortex (butt type a), only the minimum amount of semi-invasive flakes have been taken to create one cutting edge and a sharpened point by a tranchet flake removal on one face (point type vi), this minimum amount of working and one cutting edge is quite usual with type E handaxes. If intended as a handaxe rather than a Ne…

Complete, small sub-cordate handaxe, of Wymer, J.J. (1999) type E/G, of slightly brown patinated flint of good, semi-translucent quality with few coarse inclusions, all flake scars appear to be semi-soft hammer struck and all surfaces have been modified with flakes overlapping at the centre, no trace of the original surface of the “blank” nodule, part nodule or large flake survive including the cortex. All edges and the high points to the flake scars are abraded and rolled, either from the action of the sea or the ancient river delta system that formed the Cromer Forest Bed…

Complete sub-cordate handaxe of Wymer (1999) type G in lightly rolled condition, hard hammer struck flake scars to the entirety of both faces obscuring any original surfaces of the “blank” chosen to make this, the profile is of plano-convex section (one face convex, one face flatter), this suggests that the blank may have been a large thermal (frost) fracture or a large struck flake (practiced less often) as these typically have this profile naturally. Both faces are partially black/dark grey, but large areas have patinated orange/brown from exposure to iron oxides, the dar…

Small ovate handaxe in fresh condition, of Wymer, J.J. (1999) type E/K, of partially patinated, mottled grey flint; the dorsal face is the most extensively worked with one side of the of the point left unworked, a natural fracture, this is a shade darker than the flake scars next to it and appears quite blank, the ventral face is worked around the periphery, again leaving a large natural orange patinated fracture surface unmodified in the centre; the flake scars have fallen short and hinge terminated forming an “island”, the hinges are concentrated on the poorer quality, co…

Complete small, sub-cordate handaxe in fresh condition, of Wymer. J, J, (1999) type E/G, of pale buff and light grey patinated flint with a few darker grey inclusions. Both faces are completely covered with semi-hard hammer struck flake scars that overlap at the centre point, no original surface of the “blank” it was made from remain unmodified. There is a large linier flaw in the flint to one side, this was present within the flint at the time of knapping as the flake scars are affected slightly differently as they came off either side of the flaw, these linier flaws are q…

Small, asymmetric handaxe in fairly fresh condition, of mottled grey flint, now lightly patinated dark brownish apart from the cortex extant to the dorsal face, this is thin, but retains the chalky off-white colour. Being under ten cm long, it is classified as a Wymer (1999) type E, the asymmetry to the profile (plano-convex) and plan (one edge appears to have been intentionally blunted, for handling?) is probably due to the shape of the blank from which it was made from, likely to have been a thermal (frost) fracture or a large struck flake, something of similar cross section to begin…

Medium sized, heavy butted (corticated butt type a) handaxe in slightly rolled condition with slight losses to the thin edges and the high points to the flake scars, of mottled grey flint now patinated orange/brown. It is best classified as a Wymer (1999) type D/F, though it doesn’t fit either very well,  all flake scars appear to be confidently semi-hard hammer struck with good flake terminations, no hinges; a chalky hollow (?fossil cast to the cortex) to one side, near to the steeper of the lateral cutting edges the has been knapped around successfully. The rounded point h…

Segmental “chopping” tool/handaxe in slightly rolled condition with minor loss to the thin edges and the high points of the flake scars, of dark, slightly mottled flint now patinated black/brown colour. Best classified as Wymer (1999) type L, opportunistically knapped from an unusual choice of blank; an incomplete nodule with one flatter end, now bifacially knapped to a conventional lenticular section, the other end is of triangular section, forming an almost pointed, blunt “handle”. Two patches of thin, worn grey cortex remain between the flake scars, one to th…

Small cordate/sub cordate, of Wymer (1999) type E/D/J, of lightly rolled and slightly patinated black flint with paler grey inclusions, now a grey/brown colour, the damage to the point is a pronounced flake scar, this has a slightly matt surface compared to the glossy nature of the original worked surfaces, this is likely to be from being cast on to other flints and stones during bad weather by the sea, also this is the likely cause of the incipient hertzian cones that appear as small impact rings to both faces, both faces appear to be entirely modified by hard hammer struck flake scar…

Semi-hard hammer struck “handaxe” or segmental chopper in lightly rolled condition, of Wymer’s type D/L. Black patinated flint with an old natural break now patinated misty beige, the flake scars cut into this earlier patination, the flaking has achieved a point and a crude, curved zig zag cutting edge for half of the length, the rest of this is cortical. Wonderfully rough but serviceable. Lower Palaeolithic, c. 600,000 BC.

Semi-hard hammer struck handaxe of very stout form being wider than it is long, of Wymer’s type E, these by definition are small handaxes less than 10 cm long made from an opportunistically found piece of surface flint, the knapping is usually (but not always, as in this case) is to form one good cutting edge; here, a very short nodule of good black flint with thin grey cortex was selected and the flake removals were concentrated to form two straight edges converging to a point, both lateral cutting edges and point in one. There are the remains of a Bryozoan colony to one face, t…

Hard hammer struck large handaxe rough-out in slightly rolled condition, broken obliquely in antiquity, probably during manufacture, there is a small void across the break that may have weakened the flint at this point. Of mottled flint, now patinated orange/brown and black with a patch of white chalky cortex to one side of what would eventually be intended as the butt or point, recent damage to the edges shows the flint was originally grey/black with a very large coarse inclusion to the middle. Lower Palaeolithic, c. 600,000 BC.

Semi-hard hammer struck miniature handaxe of Wymer’s type E, in slightly rolled condition: - of mottled grey flint now orange/brown patinated, the recent damage to the thin edges now show the original light to dark grey colour of the flint. one lateral edge has circa. 5 mm missing from the width, also recent sea damage. Although very small, it has had the effort put into it to further sharpen the point with a tranchet flake removal (point type vi). Other examples of miniature handaxes from this area are: NMS-F81FD1, NMS-0D00D4 and NMS-71AF1F  Lower Palaeolith…

Small, semi-hard hammer struck handaxe of Wymer’s type E, in lightly rolled condition: - of mottled grey flint now orange/brown patinated, the recent damage to the thin edges now show the original colour of the flint. The cortex to the butt (butt type a) is predominately to one face, though there is a tiny patch to the other face between the flake scars, this may indicate this handaxe could have been made from a flattened cylindrical knob broken off from a larger, irregular nodule of flint, no tranchet flake scar to the point (point type v). Lower Palaeolithic, c. 600,000 BC.

Small, semi-hard hammer struck handaxe of Wymer's type E in slightly rolled condition: - of mottled grey flint now slightly brown patinated, Sub-trapezoidal plan with a pronounced plano-convex cross section, the dorsal face (convex) retains a patch of thin, weathered cortex to one side, this remains as there is a concavity in the cortex to this side, making flake removals awkward, the butt to this face is a natural thermal (frost) fractured surface, this appears dull and matt compared to the other flake scars around it. This face has a tranchet flake to the point to further sharpen…

Crude handaxe or handaxe rough-out, semi-hard hammer struck from a small, flattish nodule of black glossy flint with slightly different formations of cortex to each face, the dorsal face is whiter than the grey cortex to the ventral, both patches of cortex are thin and worn. The flint is flawed with a large white linier thermal crack to the dorsal face, the ventral has three chalky voids within the flint that have caused “potlids” (discoidal thermal fractures) to pop off the surface around them, the combination of these flaws may have been the reason the handaxe was unfinis…
