Object type: THIMBLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published
Medevial or Post Medieval (c. AD1400-1650) ring-type thimble made from cast copper alloy. The thimble is in the form of a conic frustrum and bears oblique rows of 1.5mm diameter, drilled hollows. Diameter 16.7mm reducing to 14.7mm, Height 9.2mm, Thickness 1.7mm, Mass 4.29g.
Ring thimbles are seen as being Medieval and of 15th century date but do seem to occur in later contexts (Margeson, 1993, Fig 139, No 1461, parallels in Amsterdam dating from th 16th -17th century are cited) suggesting that they continued in use in a specialist role.
