Lead alloy toy tankard. Cast cylindrical model of a tankard, hollow, with an integrally cast moulded handle projecting from the mould line along one side. It is possible that other features were set opposite, where two surface irregularities may be either stubs from another handle or casting flaws. At least four rows of tiny moulded dots ascend the vessel wall, and it has a slightly expanded foot ring. Forsyth and Egan (2005, page 293 no. 8.128) illustrate a toy lidded tankard of 17th or 18th-century date from London. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1675-1775 Height: 23.7mm, Diameter (…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Silver coin fragment. A small part of a silver hammered coin which has been sharply folded at least twice into a tiny billet. The finder kindly suggests this may have been a cut half or quarter penny short or voided long cross penny, which could imply the period 11180-1278. The mass, however, points to a value of less than one half farthing for the fragment. Suggested date: Medieval, 1180-1278 Length: 6.1mm, Width: 5mm, Weight: 0.12gms

Copper alloy probable buckle plate fragment. A trapezoid sheet metal fragment, straight-sided, with a large [diameter 4.5mm] if slightly ragged hole at its broader end, where it is broken. This hole may be the end of a slot or hole for the putative buckle pin and is larger than a rivet-hole. Two rivets of diameter 3mm pass through the plate on either side of this hole. There is a diagonal row of three low bosses at the middle of the plate, raised by stamping from behind. Before this, a rocker-work pattern of two adjacent saltires had been added to its display side. Copper alloy strap end. A strap end of composite construction with two plates of thickness 0.9 and 0.4mm with a central probably forked spacer plate between them whose tip projects at the outer ogival end. The inner end is lightly engrailed. A rivet of diameter 1.7mm passes through the inner end to attach the plates to each other and the strap. A woven fabric strap remains preserved between the plates – the finder kindly notes he had kept the object wet to preserve what was at first thought to be a leather strap, as the find-spot was also damp. The use of a textile strap may deno…

Possible buckle plate fragment. A trapezoid fragment of cast copper alloy sheet with faint horizontal lines at its wider end and with an impressed slot at the other narrower end. Folded. A tiny aperture close to the edge at the wider end might be a tiny [diameter 1mm] rivet hole or fortuitous damage. Folded and abraded. County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy boot fragment. A flat cast and probably pressed metal curved component, flanged on the inner side of its curve, probably from the heel of a work boot with metal inserts or attachments. This interpretation is suggested by the form, and by four drilled holes of diameter 2.5mm equidistantly distributed along the flange, which would have enabled the object to be incorporated into the layers of a stitched sole. A series of incised chevrons appear on the outer side, though with a zone along one edge of the series undecorated. Probably originally of annular form with a butted seam, now partly flattened. Copper alloy unidentified object. A rectangular sheet metal plate with a series of closely spaced [8 per cm] fine grooves of length 15mm extending from one straight edge, and with faint traces of grooves and a split in the opposite side. Probably for a craft usage. Marks of this form on bones have been associated with the making of pins, on ‘pinner’s bones’, though at a larger scale. Similar close spacing is also seen on comb teeth, so this object might have figured in the cutting of comb teeth – small one-piece bone combs for beards and moustaches are known fro…
