Record ID: NLM-FB699B
Object type: SHOT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead possible shot. A cast object comprising a strip or sprue of width 5mm with a series of seven peloidal balls, each of diameter 4mm and each at the end of a conical ingate. The strip is broken at one end and melted at the other. Patinated. This might be an expedient to cast birdshot or a blunderbuss or shotgun charge of pellets; a mechanical function seems unlikely given the soft nature of the material. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800 Length: 39.8mm, Width: 5.9mm, Height: 8mm, Weight: 7.86gms

Lead shot. Cast ball with numerous tiny crescentic marks, possibly from gnawing by rats attracted by the sugary taste of lead corrosion product, or possibly from use as an improvised teething toy. The latter is perhaps less likely in this case as the size would be ideal to choke a troublesome infant, which one would hope was not intended. Patinated. The mass points to an intended use with a light fowling piece or ‘rook and rabbit’ gun. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800 Diameter: 12.8mm, Weight: 10.05gms

Oolitic Limestone stone shot. Pecked stone ball of a size apt to be fired by the smaller version of the Minion, which was one of the smaller guns mounted on wheeled carriages to support troops in the field. Stone shot was an early projectile derived from the similar balls made to be lobbed by catapult artillery. It would later be superseded by cast iron shot. Stone shot was used during the Wars of the Roses (c.1450-1489) along with other projectiles, and by the armies of Henry VIII (1509-1547) and Elizabeth I (1558-1603) – though the English ships which assailed the Great Spani…

Lead possible shot. Small cast ball with numerous planar facets across its surface, patinated. The surface might hint at inclusion of a ball in a charge of canister fired from a cannon, though there is scant evidence for any military activity hereabouts; perhaps a blunderbuss could produce this effect. The mass would be apt to a shot for use with a light fowling piece or ‘rook and rabbit’ gun. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800 Diameter: 11.4mm, Weight: 8.13gms

Lead probable shot. A cast or mis-cast dumbbell shot, comprising two balls of diameter 17mm linked by an integrally cast collar, with probable impact damage to the end of one ball, and the whole object now flattened along one long side. The appearance of a flattened circumferential band on one ball [at top in illustration] may arise from set up, a distorting effect occurring at the instant of firing, suggesting this projectile has indeed been fired. The more extensive flattening may arise either from impact against a hard flat surface – perhaps while following a spinning course -…

Lead shot. Cast ball with faint trace of mould line, retaining a grey tint to the metal, probably unfired. The mass, at one ounce, may suggest this to have been for use with a smoothbore muzzle loading firearm of military specification, possibly a musket – albeit the mass of this ball falls below a 12 bore [i.e. twelve balls to the pound weight] standard to be expected of a 17th-century musket. This is a widely shared characteristic in the shot from a large assemblage reported from the vicinity. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800 Diameter: 17.4mm, Weight: 28.58gms

Lead shot. Cast ball with a flattened circumferential band arising from set up, a distorting effect occurring at the instant of firing. The mass, at over an ounce, could suggest this to have been fired from a smoothbore nuzzle loading firearm of military specification, possibly a carbine or musket. This object was originally suggested to be a lead weight. Dave Haldenby kindly notes that it could be considered of Viking date by virtue of its form and patina; it is undecorated. DH ref: D2a. This would not be considered close enough in its weight to the putative Viking Age standards gov…
