Object type: DENTAL IMPLEMENT
Broad period: MODERN
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete and misshapen Modern silver dental plate, dating to c. 1800-1920. The plate consists of the upper palate, but a significant proportion is missing and the plate has also been severely compressed. Nonetheless imprints of gums and tooth stubs survive, and there is a rectangular protrosion which may have been for attachment or may less likely be an extremely crude form of tooth representation. Most of the dentures/dental implements recorded on this database are made from gold and a silver one is relatively rare, as the record for LANCUM-F66F0B states. That example …

An incomplete very attractive modern enamel work brooch dating from AD 1850-1920. The brooch pin is missing, the circular plate survives. It is inspired by earlier Limoges and Mosan champlevé enamel work of the medieval period and likely dates to the late 19th century Arts and Crafts revival of these designs. It is composed around a cruciform shape, with a central floreate cross lying within a white enamel squared lozenge. These are overlain by a knotwork design which divides the enamel into multiple cells. Traces of red and royal blue enamel can be seen, while the white lozeng…

A modern copper alloy toy aeroplane, dating from AD 1935-1950. The plane is simply and elegantly cast, with the main body of the fuselage notably slender in its rectangular form. The wings flare outwards from here, their tips angled slightly forwards. The tailfin is triangular in shape. The precise form of the plane represented is unclear, although it is likely a single pilot fighter plane and most likely a Spitfire. Despite the more common use of Hurricane fighters, Spitfires captured (and continue to retain a hold over) the public imagination, and had a reputation for elegance…

A pierced copper alloy modern personal token dating to the 19th century. The object is pointed oval in shape and flattened in cross section. It may have been adapted from a copper alloy coin to become a personal token. It has a pierced circular aperture at its centre. Both surfaces have been deliberately worn so that any original details of the coin beneath are lost. Atop this has been inscribed the figure of a male head, which appears Roman in its styling, sporting a helmet and cuirass, although as the helmet lacks cheek pieces and a plume it may be intended as a representation…

The third fragment bears no nails and is warped and damaged. There are skeuomorphic patches of green on the brownish leather of the soles, which…

The object takes the form of a flattened male body, with both arms raised in the action of firing a rifle or musket. The figure has a notably nipped in waist and wears a knapsack on his back. The slender waist is due to an implied belt, as a possible pouch is suspended from this at the front. On his head is a shako style hat, which is tall with a marked brim.
